    • An electrical switch for switching direct current in an inductively driven electromagnetic projectile launching system is provided with a rotor having a generally cylindrical conductive element with a first portion that includes a continuously conductive external surface. A second portion of the conductive element includes a pair of insulating members fixed at angularly spaced locations such that sections of the conductive elements and the insulating members alternate along the generally cylindrical surface of the elememt. One pair of angularly spaced retractable brush members extend radially inward toward and axially along the conductive surface of the first portion of the conductive element to make sliding electrical contact with the conductive element during the inductor charging phase of a launch sequence. A second pair of angularly spaced retractable brush members extend radially toward the segmented portion of the rotor conductive element and serve to commutate current from the switch to a pair of generally parallel projectile launching rails. A switch housing encircles the rotor and supports conductors which are used to electrically connect one brush of each pair to the launcher circuit. The other brushes are electrically shorted. Means is provided for moving the brush members into and out of contact with the rotor conductive element to achieve the desired switching function.

    • A current limiting device including a housing in which a chamber is formed. A pair of spaced electrical terminals are located at opposite ends of the housing to be disposed in communication with the chamber. An electrically conductive fusible metal is disposed in the chamber to provide an electrically conductive path between the terminals. An insulating member is disposed in the chamber between opposite ends of the housing to define a flow passageway between the electrical terminals. The flow passageway may include a constricted portion that has a cross-sectional area and a length that is substantially less than the rest of the flow passageway defined by the insulating member such that with the occurrence of a fault current, vaporization of the fusible metal initially occurs in the constricted portion of the flow passageway. Expansion means are also provided for buffering the pressure rise in the chamber when the fusible metal is vaporized.

    • A safety switch for use in an inductively driven electromagnetic launcher system includes three tubular conductors each having a substantially cylindrical internal surface, wherein these internal surfaces have substantially the same internal diameter and are positioned at spaced locations along a common axis. A fourth tubular conductor having a cylindrical external surface with a diameter which is substantially equal to the internal diameters of the first three conductors. This fourth conductor is mounted for movement along the common axis such that its external surface is capable of making sliding electrical contact with the internal surfaces of the first three conductors. The external surface of the fourth conductors has sufficient axial length to be capable of making electrical contact with each of the internal surfaces simultaneously. Means are provided for electrically connecting the first three tubular conductors to an external circuit and a switch actuating means serves to move the fourth tubular conductor axially along the common axis.

    • A power lead for a cryostat has high temperature superconducting (HTSC) conductors extending inward toward a pool of liquid cryogen in the cryostat in series with normal conductors extending from the HTSC conductors to outside the cryostat. Tubular shrouds vented to atmosphere direct a flow of cryogen vapor along the HTSC conductors to maintain them superconducting, and along the normal conductors to remove Joule heat and heat leakage along the normal conductors. In one embodiment, a pool of liquid nitrogen maintained within a tubular inner shroud is the principal coolant for the normal conductors. Helium vapor is circulated over the HTSC conductors and is then directed by an outer tubular shroud around the inner tubular shroud to provide additional cooling for the normal conductors. Flexible connectors at one end of each of the HTSC conductors accommodate for individual thermal contractions of these conductors.

    • A vapor cooled current lead for a superconducting device located in a cryostat includes a normal conductor section extending from ambient conditions inward to an intermediate point, and a composite lead having a ceramic high temperature superconductor core with a metallic sheath extending between the normal conductor section and the superconducting device, preferably in a helical path to reduce heat leak by conduction. The metallic sheath is stripped away at spaced intervals, preferably adjacent the low temperature end of the composite lead, and the gaps are filled with a filler which provides mechanical strength for the core and reduces thermal conduction. A flow of cryogen vapor directed by a tubular housing maintains the high temperature superconducting material below its critical temperature, and cools the normal conductors.
