    • A fluid-tight closure apparatus for providing a fluid-tight seal between the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical bore in an enclosure receiving therein a high-pressure fluid and the outer peripheral surface of an end closure wall held in the cylindrical bore. The apparatus has a pressurizing ring fitted around the outer peripheral surface at the inner end portion of the end closure wall for a small axial displacement. The pressurizing ring is adapted to derive the required sealing pressure from the internal fluid pressure in the enclosure. The apparatus further has a seal ring disposed between the pressurizing ring and the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical bore and/or between the pressurizing ring and the end closure wall, and a bolt screwed through the end wall member into the pressurizing ring for imparing an initial sealing surface pressure to sealing areas, through the axial displacement of the pressurizing ring toward the end closure wall.

    • There is provided a joint between a pressure vessel lid and a pressure vessel. The vessel is intended for very high pressures and of the type comprising a thinwalled container which is supported by an external rigid support structure, such that the container provides the vessel tightness and the structure provides the vessel strength. The lid is clamped onto a container rim by means of screws via blocks. An annular shoulder is fixed to the support structure above the container rim. There is an axial play between the blocks and the shoulder. This play is adapted to be eliminated for a relatively low container pressurization at which the yield limit of the container material is reached. The screws merely have to provide the clamping force required to ensure the vessel tightness until the blocks abut the shoulder, whereafter a further container pressurization provides the necessary lid clamping force.

    • A new and improved pin-type vessel connector wherein a first vessel section includes double connector rings separated by an annular recess which receives a single connector ring of a second vessel section, the connector rings being releasably joined by a plurality of pin-type connectors which include radially aligned openings in each of the rings for receiving a tapered pin, one portion of the opening in the single ring connector being partially tapered to provide a full bearing engagement against the tapered pin under load conditions. Positioning elements are mounted with the single connector ring for positioning the single connector ring uniformly within the annular recess between the double rings in spite of changes in the circumference or roundness of the single ring.

    • The present apparatus for skinning or peeling of produce comprises a rotatably mounted pressure vessel having a cover operable from within the vessel for sealing the vessel. The cover is pressure operated and permitted to fall open under the force of gravity upon pressure release. A pivoted latching pawl is provided in the pressure vessel for engaging the cover to hold it open. The pawl is also gravity operated to latch the cover in an open position. In the process for skinning or peeling produce, the pressure vessel is loaded with the produce, sealed and steam is introduced therein to rapidly increase the pressure and temperature within the vessel sufficiently so that a layer under the skin of the produce will come to a boil in response to pressure release. The pressure is maintained for a given period until the layer of the produce under its skin is sufficiently heated. Then the pressure is reduced to atmospheric pressure in either one or two steps, whereby said boiling occurs and the skin is removed thereby.

    • In order to reduce the time required for refueling a nuclear reactor, the studs utilized for securing the head of the reactor pressure vessel are provided with modified breechblock threads at their lower ends, and also at their upper ends. After being detensioned, the studs are rotated 60* for disengagement from corresponding threads in a flange at the top of the pressure vessel and are lifted out of the stud holes when the head is removed. The studs are tensioned and detensioned by a plurality of portable hydraulic stud tensioning devices or tensioners which are attached to the upper ends of the studs by the modified breechblock threads at the upper ends of the studs. The tensioners are carried by a separate hoist system mounted on the closure head for the vessel.

    • A closure member for a pressure vessel is held in the bore in the vessel by a slidable locking member. The locking memer is reciprocable laterally between a first position at which it holds the closure member in the bore and a second position clear of the closure member to allow the latter to be removed from the bore in the pressure vessel. When in the first position a passageway in the locking member couples a pressure fluid supply line to a passageway in the closure member leading into the bore of the vessel.
