    • The cables containing the electrical wiring for the control rod mechanisms and the instrumentation for a nuclear reactor are brought by the shortest path to cable support racks affixed to the enclosure surrounding the control mechanisms hereinafter referred to as the mechanism enclosure. The cables are supported on a series of such support racks until they terminate in receptacles mounted on the floor of a platform attached to the mechanism enclosure on the side facing the refueling storage area for the mechanisms, vessel head and internals. An elongated frame-like cable tray is attached to the platform by a hinged joint while the other end is supported on flanged guide rollers. The cables are looped onto the cable tray at its hinged end and are supported in tiers thereon by separator plates and anchor clamps. At the other end of the tray, the cables are hung in large loops and are connected to plugs in the floor of the instrument room. The cables accordingly need not be disconnected from the mechanisms when moving same for refueling.

    • A nuclear reactor has control rods which may be operated between control positions and retracted positions by linearly-movable elements or drive means. In the retracted position, a control rod or a group of control rods may be retained by latches, the lower tips of which enter a groove in a linearly-movable element or drive means. The latches are movable between a released position and a restraining position. The latches are made of magnetic steel and are maintained in the restraining position by permanent magnet means which are operable between a coupled magnetic position wherein the drive means is maintained in the restraining condition and a decoupled position wherein the latches may release the associated drive means. Such operation of the magnet is in response to movement of a missile shield associated with the nuclear reactor.

    • In order to reduce the time required for refueling a nuclear reactor, the studs utilized for securing the head of the reactor pressure vessel are provided with modified breechblock threads at their lower ends, and also at their upper ends. After being detensioned, the studs are rotated 60* for disengagement from corresponding threads in a flange at the top of the pressure vessel and are lifted out of the stud holes when the head is removed. The studs are tensioned and detensioned by a plurality of portable hydraulic stud tensioning devices or tensioners which are attached to the upper ends of the studs by the modified breechblock threads at the upper ends of the studs. The tensioners are carried by a separate hoist system mounted on the closure head for the vessel.
