    • A multi-speed transmission for transmitting power between a first shaft and a second shaft includes a plurality of gear sets, a plurality of connector gears corresponding to the plurality of gear sets and a shifting mechanism. Each gear set includes a first gear rotatably disposed about the first shaft, a uni-directional free wheeling mechanism between the first gear and the first shaft, and a second gear coupled to the second shaft. The uni-directional free wheeling mechanism permits the first gear to freely rotate about the shaft when the first gear rotates in a preselected direction relative to the rotation of the first shaft and locks the first gear to the first shaft at all other times. The first and second gears are spaced apart from one another but may be interconnected by one of the plurality of connector gears. Each connector gear is movable between an engaged position and a disengaged position. In the engaged position, each connector gear mutually engages the first gear and the second gear of the gear set. In the disengaged position, each connector gear is disengaged from the first gear and the second gear. The shifting mechanism moves each one of the plurality of connector gears between the engaged position and the disengaged position. The shifting mechanism maintains at least one of the plurality of connector gears in the engaged position at all times.

    • A variable-speed gear mechanism comprises a pinion with spring-biased radial pins and a face gear with an operative face that meshes with the pinion at various meshing radii. The gear has a central part which defines a radially innermost set of part-cylindrical sockets. Each socket has an axial opening which faces outwardly from the gear face and a lateral opening which faces radially outwardly and through which a pin is received laterally into the socket during meshed operation. A recess extends radially outwardly and in both circumferential direction from the bottom of the lateral opening of each socket, permitting unobstructed movement of a pin to and from the socket. A circular groove may define the required recesses. Its depth at a particular radius may be sufficient to avoid contact between the pins and the face gear thereby providing a neutral function. Meshing structure at a next larger meshing radius may consist of another set of sockets with lateral openings facing radially inwardly. Radial grooves may direct a pin located in a socket of the innermost set to a corresponding socket in the other set as the pinion is moved radially to change gear ratios.

    • This invention relates to bicycles, specifically to an improved speed changing mechanism for a bicycle. The primary attribute of this invention is the utilization of a pair of pinion shafts and a pair of face gears to accomplish variation in speed. The face gear teeth and pinion are designed so that only one pair of teeth mesh at a time so that effectively they run as a pair of spur gears. The pinion shafts both forward and aft float inside a telescopic sleeve which allows a large number of gear ratios to be installed on the bicycle. The telescopic sleeve functions as a drive shaft connecting the output of the crank to a follower. The cyclist can select a gear ratio at the crank end by positioning the forward pinion. The aft pinion is positioned by a cable plus a cable lever. The invention eliminates the chain and provides a constant speed ratio at the crank. The telescopic sleeve eliminates the tension in the chain and will increase bearing life. The invention does not require major modifications to the bicycle because the free wheel mechanism and crank are not disturbed.

    • A multi-speed transmission has particular usefulness in bicycles, completely eliminating the use of the commonly used derailleur and the exposed flexible cable and the readjustment problems inherent with that prior structure. The transmission includes separate concentric gear rings which to a certain extent operate independently of each other. A shift mechanism for shifting the transmission is such the transmission can not be shifted from one gear to a non-adjacent gear without stopping at a gear therebetween. That is, no gear can be skipped. This is accomplished by a particular relationship of a pawl, a pusher, a shift segment plate and barrels mounted on the shift segment plate, among other parts.

    • A gear drive comprising one or more gear stocks, each gear stock including a plurality of concentric gears arranged in a predetermined size progression order along a shaft and being engaged to a preselected level of torsional engagement to rotate with respect thereto. The respective stock gears transmit torque to the shaft by a frictional engagement mechanism comprising a plurality of washers interspaced between adjacent gears, with at least the end sliding washers making positive torsional engagement with the shaft, and an axial spring compressing the stock gears against the washers, and against each other through the washers, to a predetermined level of frictional engagement. The idler gear also simultaneously engages a driven gear, which in one of the embodiments can be any one gear of a second gear stock constructed substantially as set forth above, to provide a preselected gear ratio. At either end of the drive change gears are combined with said gear drive to provide a predetermined torque or speed advantage.
