    • A continuously variable friction drive transmission for a bicycle is provided by driving the rear bicycle wheel by frictional engagement with a rotating rim driver. The rim driver has a lateral conical surface matching a lateral conical surface of a driver plate. A transmission driver wheel is selectively positioned between the lateral conical surfaces of the rim driver and driver plate. The position along a shifting arm of the transmission driver wheel determines the speed ratios obtained between the driver plate and rim driver. The driver plate is then rotated by the pedal assembly through a speed increasing coupling. The transmission driver wheel is always in contact with the driver plate. When the driver plate ceases to rotate and the rear wheel and rim driver continue to rotate, the force on the transmission driver wheel automatically rotates the shifting arm on which the transmission driver wheel is coupled to kick the transmission driver wheel out of engagement with the conical surface of the rim driver thereby allowing the rear bicycle wheel to freewheel. The transmission driver wheel is returned into mutual engagement between the conical surfaces of the driver plate and rim driver, when the driver plate again rotates at a speed fast enough to couple the driver plate and rim driver again into a force transmitting relationship.

    • To encourage the use of bicycles for both recreation and transportation by reducing the normally excessive load on the cyclist during hill climbing. A simple on/off push button controls the power assist while a clutch automatically handles both engagement and disengagement. The invention enables a powerful (80 to 150 watts of power delivered to the bicycle tire), compact, lightweight (2.5 to 4 kg) system capable of boosting a cyclist during the hills of a 1 to 2 hour bicycle ride. The system is compatible with most bicycles, is easy to install yet includes a theft deterrent mount. The system includes several safety features including a very modest high speed limit (e.g. 12 mph) beyond which power assist is automatically disabled, and a modest power level which can be overridden by normal bicycle brakes.

    • A variable speed shaft drive system for bicycles employs a drive shaft that is generally horizontally coupled between the pedals and the rear wheel of the bicycle. A pinion gear at the forward end of the drive shaft is engaged by a ring gear driven by the pedals to transmit drive power from the pedals to the drive shaft. A drive head at the rear end of the drive shaft frictionally engages a drive pick-up plate mounted to the rear wheel of the bicycle to transmit drive power from the rotating drive shaft to the rear wheel. Infinitely variable speed control is achieved by means of a shifting fork actuated by the user to position the drive head at selected distances from the center of the drive pick-up plate. Alternatively, a second drive head/pick-up ring combination may be substituted for the ring gear/pinion gear combination driven by the pedals to provide even smoother operation. The second drive head may be positioned a fixed distance from the center of its associated pick-up ring or it may also be made variable, resulting in a dual variable speed shaft drive to provide a greater range of speed ratios selectable by the rider.

    • A transmission for a pedal-propelled vehicle has a drive shaft rotated by a crankset and disposed radially with respect to the driving wheel of the vehicle. A friction wheel is slidably connected to the shaft by a one-way clutch and is in engagement with a friction member connected to the driving wheel to rotate therewith. The friction wheel includes a tubular shaft through which the drive shaft extends. A shifting unit is connected to the friction wheel by means of the tubular shaft to slide along the drive shaft therewith but is held against turning. The shifting unit includes a gear train having a pinion in mesh with a fixed rack parallel to the drive shaft. First and second normally inoperative connections between the tubular shaft and the gear train are provided, the first to drive the gear train to rotate the pinion to shift the unit and the friction wheel towards the axis of the friction member and the second to drive the gear train to shift the unit and friction wheel towards the periphery thereof. The connections are made by a control including means responsive to the speed of the tubular shaft and means, adjustable by the operator, resiliently opposing the speed responsive means. When the speed responsive means is dominant, the first connection is rendered operative, when the resilient means is dominant, the second connection is rendered operative, and when neither means is dominant, a neutral is established with neither connection operative, the transmission thereby effecting ratio changes in relation to the wanted rate of pedalling or cadence that is established by the resilient means.

    • Compared to derailleur bicycle chain transmissions, internal hub transmissions for bicycles have higher friction and a lower torque capacity. In addition, bicycle hub transmissions are generally incompatible with alternate drive arrangements such as direct-drive, or different mounting options such as mono-blade mounting. The present invention addresses these concerns by employing bevel gears with roller teeth in a planetary bicycle hub transmission. The bevel gear configuration allows larger planet gears, which gives sufficient circumferential space for roller teeth to reduce the meshing friction. The larger planet gears also increase the allowable torque. Furthermore, the bevel gear configuration facilitates the high ratios required for direct-drive, and results a hub structure highly compatible with mono-blade mounting. With this is view, the hub is designed for both chain-drive and direct-drive, and for both double-blade and mono-blade mounting.
