    • A gear arrangement 10 which comprises a first disc member 12 rotatable about a first axis 14 and carrying rings 16 of teeth 18, the rings 16 being centered on the axis 14 and at respective distances therefrom. A second member 20 is rotatable about a second axis 22 and carries further teeth 24. The second member can move toward and away from the first axis 14. The teeth 18, 24 are so formed as to allow the second teeth 24 to mesh in driving manner with each ring of teeth 18 as the second member 20 moves toward and away from the first axis 14. In this way, the transmission ratio of the gear arrangement can be changed.

    • A variable ratio transmission comprises a pinion with spring loaded pins mounted on a face gear which is a disc with one of the plate-like surfaces containing a plurality of grooves separated by crowns extending from the periphery of the disc. At intermittent radii on the face gear, the pins of the pinion mesh with every other groove of the face gear and missed grooves at one intermittent radius are the meshing grooves of an adjacent radius so that the number of meshing radii are increased compared with dimensioning the face gear so that the pins of the pinion mesh with every groove of the face gear at intermittent radii. The tops of the crowns, at least between meshing radii, are tapered to provide bearing surfaces which reduce wear and friction.

    • A multi-speed transmission has particular usefulness in bicycles, completely eliminating the use of the commonly used derailleur and the exposed flexible cable and the readjustment problems inherent with that prior structure. The transmission includes separate concentric gear rings which to a certain extent operate independently of each other. A shift mechanism for shifting the transmission is such the transmission can not be shifted from one gear to a non-adjacent gear without stopping at a gear therebetween. That is, no gear can be skipped. This is accomplished by a particular relationship of a pawl, a pusher, a shift segment plate and barrels mounted on the shift segment plate, among other parts.

    • A variable speed and direction power transmission attachment for driving the cutting tool carriage of a lathe or the like, the attachment having sets of intermeshing male and female cog gears. Certain of such sets each comprises a face gear having a plurality of concentric rows of tooth socket elements formed therein. A male cog gear is selectively settable to mesh with any of such rows to change the gear ratio. By changing the combined setting of different sets of gears, a wide variation in overall gear ratio may be obtained to provide many different feeding speeds of the carriage, suitable for general cutting and for screw thread cutting. A reversing mechanism, also constructed of intermeshing cog gears, enables the direction of drive to be reversed or the drive to be disconnected to permit manual drive of the carriage.

    • A multispeed, chainless bicycle drive and transmission system wherein the drive train includes a shiftable drive shaft connecting the pedal crank shaft and driving wheel by means of vertical gear wheels mounted transversely thereon having a multitude of concentric series of gear teeth for providing different drive or gearing ratios. The geared drive shaft is moved from one series of gear teeth to another on one or both of the gear wheels to change the gear ratio by means of two independently moving, splined, concentric shaft members which mate through contact gears with the selected gear teeth series. The splined shaft members are mounted within a tubular housing via three ball bushings which permits both longitudinal and rotational movement of the enclosed shaft members. A springloaded ball system is used to assure proper relative positioning of the splined shafts with respect to the selected gear teeth series.
