    • An information distribution system with an architecture that facilitates efficient distribution of a plurality of information asset data to a plurality of different requesting users substantially simultaneously. Fundamental components of the system include a plurality of mass storage devices that store information assets, mass storage device interface units, a switching unit, a centralized control unit and a gateway to the users. Information transfer between various components of the system is accomplished through a plurality of communication channels according to a circuit switching protocol. According to one embodiment of the invention, a plurality of communication channels are provided between the mass storage devices and the switching unit such that information asset data may be transferred, in substantially a single format and according to substantially a single protocol, from the mass storage devices directly through the switch and to the requesting user.

    • A method for performing a protocol interfacing operation for a plurality of nodes in an IEEE1394 serial bus network. Upon initialization of an IEEE1394 serial bus due to node addition or deletion, each of the nodes formats a protocol identifier packet and sends it to the other nodes. A bus manager stores the protocol identifier packets of the nodes into a protocol map. Then, a source node sends a protocol query packet including a target node identifier to the bus manager to request the transfer of data. Upon receiving the protocol query packet from the source node, the bus manager retrieves a communication protocol from the protocol map and sends a protocol set packet including information about the retrieved communication protocol to the source node and a target node to perform the transfer of data between the source and target nodes through the communication protocol. Therefore, the data transfer can efficiently be performed with no necessity for checking protocols one by one.

    • A SOH (101) of a transmission frame of SDH (SONET) is terminated at a sender-side transmitter (3 or 4) and is added to remaining data at a receiver-side transmitter (4 or 3). At the sender-side transmitter (3 or 4), the remaining data (102, 103), including an administrative unit pointer (102) is converted into ATM cells and the ATM cells are sent out to an ATM network (2). After that, at the receiver-side transmitter (4 or 3), the remaining data is restored from the received ATM cells. As a result, operation, administration, and maintenance are independently performed over sections disposed at the input and the output sides of the ATM network (2). Further, processes (conversion to ATM cells, restoring SDH frames) are performed irrespective of the difference between the administrative pointer (102) and a payload (103), and the number of the signal paths (104) multiplexed in the payload (103).
