摘要： A reinforcing panel and process for making the same for use in reinforcing wood structural members including laminated beams, wood -beams, and trusses. The reinforcing panel is comprised of a plurality of synthetic fibers that are arranged parallel to one another and aligned with the longitudinal direction of the panel, and accordingly the wood structure. The panel has substantially no transverse fibers. The fibers are maintained in position by a resin encasement that completely encloses the fibers with the exception of some fibers that are closest to the surface. The surface of the reinforcing panel is treated so that those fibers closest to the surface of the panel are caused to "hair up" so that the reinforcing panel may be used with nonepoxy adhesives which are commonly used in the laminated beam industry, such as resorcinal. The reinforcing panel of the present invention is fabricated by an improved pultrusion process which uses no mandrels, or woven mats and which provides for a selectable back pressure so that the fibers of the reinforcement panel are maintained in a state of tension during the resin cure, thereby maintaining the parallel arrangement of the fibers, maintaining the longitudinal alignment of the fibers, and setting the initial strain of the fibers to decrease the initial deflection of a wood structure that is reinforced with the reinforcing panel of the present invention.

摘要： An elongated wood structural member or beam for bearing predetermined loads transverse to the lengths of the members preferably includes multiple elongate wood segments bonded together with their lengths generally aligned with the beam length as in a glue-laminated members. The predetermined load corresponds to a resisting moment that produces compressive and tensile stresses in the structural member in respective compression and tension portions of the beam on opposite sides of a neutral axis. A synthetic tension reinforcement having multiple synthetic fiber strands held within a resin matrix is adhered to at least one of the wood segments in the tension portion of the structural member and is selected to be substantially capable of bearing the tensile stress produced by the resisting moment and cooperates with the wood segments to position the neutral axis within the beam. As a result, the width and depth of the structural member and relative positions of the neutral axis and reinforcement may be selected to establish a compression portion of the structural member in which compressive stress from the resisting moment does not exceed a predetermined maximum compressive stress.

摘要： An improved multifilamentary fibrous material is formed having particles of a matrix-forming thermoplastic polymer substantially uniformly dispersed among adjoining filaments in the absence of fusion bonding. The polymer particles initially are dispersed in an aqueous medium containing an effective amount of a dissolved polymeric binding agent and the viscosity of the medium subsequently is substantially increased to at least 50,000 cps. to form a gelled impregnation bath having a plastic flow characteristic with shear-thinning behavior wherein the polymer particles are substantially uniformly suspended. The resulting impregnation bath is caused to flow between the adjoining filaments of the multifilamentary fibrous material with a concomitant viscosity reduction which aids in the incorporation of the polymer particles. The concentration of the aqueous medium in the product is controlled to yield a uniform, handleable, drapable, tacky, and highly stable product. Upon the application of heat and pressure the improved product can be transformed into a fiber-reinforced composite article wherein the solid particles form the matrix phase.

摘要： An apparatus for monitoring the curing of a fiber reinforced composite plastic which is cured at temperatures of the order of 350.degree. C. and an ultrasonic transducer assembly useful in the apparatus. The transducer assembly comprises a lithium niobate piezoelectric element having anisotropic coefficients of thermal expansion which is mounted on a metal base of the transducer assembly by means of a layer of structured copper. The structured copper is thermo-compression diffusion bonded to the lithium niobate element and to the metal base, and is compliant in a transverse direction to compensate for differential thermal expansions while affording good electrical and thermal conductivity and good acoustic coupling between the lithium niobate element and metal base.

摘要： The invention provides a preform for a resin transfer molding process and a preform core for same. The invention further provides a resin transfer molding process employing such preform. A surface portion of the core having a concavity therein, the core comprises a flexible web secured to its surface forming a convexity over such concavity. The convexity formed by the web is deformable into the concavity during the resin transfer molding operation, but prior to the molding operation is sufficiently firm to support, without substantial deformation, oriented continuous fibers applied under tension onto the surface of the core.
