摘要： Optically variable ink for obtaining a color shaft between two distinct two colors at first and second angles of incident light comprised of an ink vehicle and optically variable flakes disposed in the ink vehicle. The optically variable flakes are comprised of a multilayer thin film interference structure having first and second parallel planar surfaces. The optically variable flakes have physical dimensions such that when the flakes are measured in directions parallel and perpendicular respectively to the planar surfaces an aspect ratio of at least 2 to 1 is provided. The multilayer thin film structure is of symmetrical design and includes a metal reflector having first and second surfaces parallel to the first and second parallel planar surfaces and at least one period disposed on each of said first and second surfaces of the metal reflector. Each period is comprised of a dielectric layer with an index of refraction of 1.65 or less and a semi-opaque layer.

摘要： Thin film optical variable article to be used in a reflection mode having a gold to green color shift with angle for currency authentication and adapted to be carried by a substantially opaque currency sheet which serves as a substrate. The article includes a substantially transparent, optically thick element carrying a subtractive colorant and having first and second surfaces and a multilayer interference coating carried on one of said first and second surfaces. The article is adapted to be carried by the currency sheet so that the coating faces the currency sheet and the colorant carrying element serves as a superstrate facing the incident light. The multilayer interference coating is comprised of a substantially opaque layer of aluminum nearest the substrate, followed by a layer of magnesium fluoride, and then by a layer of chromium having substantial transmission. The colorant has a yellow hue. At normal incidence of light the article has a coppery-gold color shifting towards a vivid green at non-normal incidence of light. The colorant operates in an essentially subtractive mode in combination with the multilayer interference coating to provide the color shift from gold to green at two different angles of incidence and substantially no color at higher angles of incidence to cause a modification of the normal incidence gold color and the color shift with angle properties as seen by reflection.

The dielectric layer comprises a mixed metal oxide layer having metal constituents of at least one lanthanide series metal (e.g. cerium oxide) and at least one transition or semiconductor metal (e.g. tin oxide). The dielectric layer is characterized by substantial water vapor impermeability so that the weatherability of the energy control sheet is substantially improved. The metal layer is either a silver layer or a silver-palladium alloy.

摘要： The embodiments herein relate to electrochromic window systems and components thereof. In particular, the disclosed embodiments relate to systems where electrochromic devices are powered and/or controlled using photonic energy. In an exemplary embodiment, a laser is driven by a driver to deliver photonic power and/or control information into an optical fiber. The optical fiber carries the power and control information to a photovoltaic converter and a controller. The photovoltaic converter and controller may be included within an insulated glass unit in some embodiments. The photovoltaic converter converts the light energy into electrical energy used to power a transition in an optical state of an electrochromic layer or layers within the insulated glass unit. The controller may be used to control the power delivered to the electrochromic layer(s), such that a smooth transition occurs. In some embodiments, control information may be transmitted in an upstream manner to communicate information regarding, for example, the state of an electrochromic device (e.g., current level of tinting, fault status, etc.).

Additional layers may be applied to the patterned layer of the reflective or absorber materials and exposed portions of the surface relief pattern in order to provide desirable optical effects to the exposed portions of the surface relief pattern. In some embodiments, the optically active coating is a color shifting thin film, or contains color shifting flakes based on Fabry Perot designs.

The color travel of an all-dielectric optically variable pigment depends on amplitude changes and wavelength shifts in reflectance peaks of the pigment. The width and center wavelength of reflectance peaks can be controlled by selecting the ratio of thicknesses between high-index and low-index layers in a thin film stack. Reflectance peaks can regenerate or become suppressed and shift with tilt angle, thus providing a wide variety of color trajectories.
