    • Branch prediction circuitry including a bimodal branch history table, a fetch-based branch history table and a selector table is provided. The local branch history table includes a plurality of entries each for storing a prediction value and accessed by selected bits of a branch address. The fetch-based branch history table included a plurality of entries for storing a prediction value and accessed by a pointer generated from selected bits of the branch address and bits from a history register. The selector table includes a plurality of entries each for storing a selection bit and accessed by a pointer generated from selected bits from the branch address and bits from the history register, each selector bit is used for selecting between a prediction value accessed from the local history table and a prediction value accessed from the fetch-based history table.

    • A system and method for reducing timing uncertainties in a serial data signal. A system may comprise a transmitter configured to transmit serial data to a receiver through a transmission medium. The receiver may comprise a retiming mechanism configured to sample the serial data using a particular phase of a clock at a point in time when the serial data signal may not be likely to experience jitter. The retiming mechanism may comprise a plurality of first units, e.g., flip-flops, where each of the first units is configured to sample the serial data using a particular phase of the clock. Each of the first units may be connected to a particular second unit, e.g., transmission gate. Each of the second units may be configured to output the value of the serial data sampled by the associated first unit upon activation. The data outputted may subsequently become part of the retimed data.

    • An apparatus and method for integrating the delivery of data from a multiplicity of sources to a set of user electronic devices that present audio, video and digital information to the user is implemented. These devices may include conventional television displays, personal computers, and other conventional audio and video equipment. Information may be received from a multiplicity of sources which may include may include digital television via terrestrial or satellite broadcast, terrestrial analog radio, and digital data exchanged via a public network, such as the Internet. The mechanism of the present invention receives the multiplicity of data streams, processes them in accordance with each stream's formatting protocols (whether an analog stream, an MPEG Transport Stream, or TCP/IP stream, for example), including any conditional access protocols, and streams the processed data, in multiplexed transport stream to the user's presentation devices via a “fat” pipe, such as a FireWire™ bus. A thin client interface decodes the streamed data addressed to its corresponding presentation device.

    • A VCO is configured using a ring oscillator with voltage controlled feedforward inverting stages coupled around the inverting stages making up the basic ring oscillator to enable the frequency of the ring oscillator to be voltage controlled. A latch and multiplexer is used to select between two or more outputs within the ring oscillator to change the basic frequency range of the VCO glitch free. To achieve a wide range VCO, additional stages are added to the basic ring oscillator. When the number of stages is an odd number greater than seven, then the voltage controlled feedforward inverting stages feedback to the outputs of the first and second inverting stages of the ring oscillator. Two additional multiplexers are added to select which feedforward inverting stage is coupled to the first and second inverting stage. This allows a wide range interleaved VCO that switches between frequency ranges glitch free.
