    • In a fuser roll for electrostatic copying machines comprising a cylindrical metal core surrounded by a cylindrical body of elastomeric material having an outside cylindrical sleeve of protective material, the end surfaces of the elastomeric material are protected from the deleterious effects of silicone fluid by sealing rings of elastomeric material such as fluorosilicone which is resistant thereto. The rings, which are rectangular in cross section and are made of uncured, deformable material, are inserted in the ends of the sleeve with the ends of the sleeve protruding. The sleeve is assembled with the metal core and placed in a cylindrical mold. Silicone rubber is injected into the space between the core and the sleeve and the sleeve and rings are expanded into contact with the mold wall. The roll is then cured. In the finished cured rolls, the rings are bonded to the end surfaces of the silicone rubber body, and to the interior cylindrical surfaces of the sleeve over an area of substantial width.

    • A truss system is disclosed for use in supporting the roof of a mine. The system comprises an assemblage of elements which permit more rapid and efficient installation than prior art truss systems which have generally been installed as a secondary operation, after the standard, required bolting pattern is in place. The present system, on the other hand, may be installed concurrently with and in fact may become part of, the standard bolting system. The system includes a pair of roof bolts installed in conventional fashion in drill holes extending at divergent angles into the mine roof on opposite sides of the mine opening. The bolts each extend through aligned openings in a bearing support plate and a separate angle block having a curved outer surface. The closed ends of a U-bolt, having a curvature corresponding to the surface of the angle block, extend around the two blocks with the open, threaded ends of the U-bolts facing one another. A pair of blocks having three parallel openings therethrough are placed on the two U-bolts, the open ends thereof extending through the outer openings, and secured with nuts. A rod threaded at both ends, or a plurality of such rods joined by a threaded coupler, extends through the center opening of the block, thereby joining the two U-bolts, and is secured by nuts on each end. The truss is tensioned to a desired degree by threaded advance of the nuts on the U-bolts and/or coupling rods. The angle blocks are disclosed in two embodiments, the first having a planar surface engaged by the bolt head or a flat washer, and the second having an inwardly curved cavity surrounding the opening through which the bolt passes and is engaged by a mating washer on the bolt head. The design of the second embodiment permits considerable variation in the relative angular orientations of the truss elements.

    • A method is provided for preparing computer disk substrates having low surface amplitude which comprises: (a) forming a liquid suspension containing aluminum powder, an aluminum alloying element and a borate composition by initially admixing the borate composition with a volatile liquid medium to obtain a borate solution and thereafter admixing the aluminum powder and aluminum alloying element with the borate solution to produce the liquid suspension; (b) heating the liquid suspension to remove the liquid medium and to obtain a dry aluminum powder composition; (c) isostatically pressurizing the dry aluminum powder composition and roller compacting the same into sheet form; (d) heating and sintering the sheet form in a non-oxidizing atmosphere; and (e) cutting and compressing the sintered sheet into computer disk substrate configuration.

    • Hollow magnetic pipe having a magnetic field extending across the hollow of the pipe is prepared by a multistep process which includes (a) forming first and second pipe halves from ductile and magnetizable sheet metal, (b) placing the pipe halves in pipelike alignment and joining each pair of adjacently disposed, opened edges thereof with a nonmagnetic seam to form a hollow pipe, (c) conditioning the hollow pipe to receive and maintain a permanent magnetic state, and (d) subjecting the conditioned hollow pipe to a magnetic field whereby the side walls abutting one nonmagnetic seam acquire a permanent north magnetic pole configuration and the side walls abutting the other nonmagnetic seam acquire a permanent south magnetic pole configuration. The hollow magnetic pipe is adapted for use as a conduit for conveying conductive fluid in magnetohydrodynamic energy amplification systems.
