    • A fuel injection valve, for an engine, comprising a nozzle body having a plurality of nozzle holes and a needle valve reciprocated in the nozzle body for controlling the inflow of the fuel into the nozzle holes is disclosed. The fuel is rendered to flow into the nozzle holes from a direction along the inner wall surface of the nozzle body around each of the nozzle holes in a first inflow mode, and from a direction substantially perpendicular to the inner wall surface of the nozzle body in a second inflow mode. The first inflow mode and the second inflow mode can be selectively switched to each other. The fuel is rendered to flow into the nozzle holes in the first inflow mode before the lapse of a predetermined time after the engine is started, and in the first or second mode as required after the lapse of the predetermined time.

    • There is provided a fuel injection valve in which nozzle holes are formed on a metering plate and fuel flowing on a face of the metering plate on the upstream side is injected outside of a face of the metering plate on the downstream side through the nozzle holes. The fuel injection valve includes a vortex flow generator means for changing a flow of fuel passing in each nozzle hole into a vortex flow, wherein the vortex flow generator means is provided on the upstream side of the metering plate. The vortex flow means is a vortex flow generator groove provided on an upper face of the metering plate and connected with a wall face of an entrance of the nozzle hole, and a main stream of fuel flowing in the groove is directed to a position shifted from the center of the nozzle hole. Alternatively, the vortex flow means is a protrusion formed on an upper face of the metering plate. A flow of fuel is changed into a vortex flow in the nozzle hole and injected from the nozzle hole. Therefore, fuel can be excellently atomized and diffused as a megaphone-shape without being formed into a liquid column spray.

    • A valve seat portion has fuel flow passages arranged between guide portions at predetermined intervals along an outer circumference of a valve body. In addition, a fuel jet adjusting plate has nozzle holes arranged along a circle coaxial with the outer circumference of the valve body, the nozzle holes corresponding to the guide portions. Therefore, even if the valve body rotates circumferentially relative to the valve seat portion, no alteration in the pressure applied to fuel flowing through the nozzle holes occurs. By suitably setting relative locations between the respective nozzle holes and the guide portions and the numbers thereof, the pressure applied to fuel injected from the respective nozzle holes is adjusted, whereby the fuel injected from the respective nozzle holes is optimally atomized.

    • A fuel jet adjusting plate has first nozzle holes arranged along a first circle coaxial with a central axis of a valve body and second nozzle holes arranged along a second circle coaxial with the central axis and having a diameter larger than that of the first circle. Each hole axis of the second nozzle holes forms an acute angle with a reference plane perpendicular to the central axis of the valve body smaller than that formed by each hole axis of the first nozzle holes with the reference plane. Hence, fuel sprays injected through the first nozzle holes can be directed away from fuel sprays injected through the second nozzle holes. As a result, the fuel sprays injected through the first nozzle holes do not interfere with the fuel sprays injected through the second nozzle holes, which makes it possible to suitably atomize injected fuel.

    • A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The injector has a valve body, an injection hole which has a width larger than a height thereof, and a fuel reservoir on the downstream side of a seat portion of the valve body. The fuel reservoir has a side surface and a bottom surface. One part of the side surface imparts one velocity component oriented in the direction of width in the injection hole to the fuel flow along the one part of the side surface. Another part of the side surface imparts another velocity component oriented in the direction of width in the injection hole to the fuel flow along the another part of the side surface. The bottom surface is formed at right angles with the center axis of the injection hole. The injection hole is communicated with the fuel reservoir via the bottom surface thereof.
