    • An optical pickup device and an optical pick-up method capable of detecting signal by collecting reflecting light are provided to compensate noise component generated by the other record layer and detect the signal recorded on a specific recording layer. An optical pickup device includes a light emitting unit(110), a receiving unit(160) and a signal detecting unit(170). The lighting-emitting area generates beam. The photo diode collects the reflection light reflected with a recording medium(200). The reflection light comprises the collimated light and coherent light. The photo diode comprises the first cell for collecting the collimated light and the second cell for collecting the coherent light. The recording medium comprises the first record layer and the second record layer. The collimated light is reflected with the first record layer. The coherent light is reflected with the second record layer. The second cell is positioned at the upper portion based on the progressive direction of the light than the first cell.

    • An optical disc apparatus and a pickup device are provided to make it possible to adopt one spot push-pull type for enabling the detection of a DPD(Differential Phase Detection) signal and the support of an optical disc having a plurality of signal layers. A light emitting unit(1) emits a signal light beam onto an optical disc. A photo-detector(9) includes at least three light detection portions disposed along a track direction of the optical disc. Each light detection portion receives the light reflected from the optical disc and generates corresponding output. A tracking error signal generator(22) generates tracking error signals of at least two types, using the outputs from the three light detecting portions. A tracking controller(25) performs the tracking control of the optical disc based on the tracking error signal.

    • PURPOSE: An optical pickup compatible with optical recording media is provided to generate a spherical aberration in a CD, and to form the size of an optical detector not to detect a light of a major axis area having a big numerical aperture of an objective lens, so as to be compatible with the CD and a DVD not-needing another variable iris. CONSTITUTION: Laser diodes(31,40) emit lights having shorter wavelengths. A laser unit(44) emits lights having long wavelengths, and separated from a reference distance where an aberration is not generated, to generate a spherical aberration. The laser unit(44) detects a light only corresponding to a radical axis area of an objective lens(38), among long wavelength of lights reflected from optical recording media. The first optical splitters(32) make lights incident from the laser diodes(31,40) and the laser unit(44) toward the objective lens(38), and make the lights reflected from the optical recording media toward optical detectors(34,41). The second optical splitter(35) is located between the first optical splitters(32) and the objective lens(38), and entirely transmits short wavelength of lights, then entirely reflects long wavelength of lights. The objective lens(38) located between the second optical splitter(35) and the optical recording media has a curve, and has a ring-shaped shield area between a minor axis area and a major axis area. The optical detectors(34,41) detect short wavelength of lights.

    • PURPOSE: A signal division method, an optical pickup unit, and a recording/reproducing apparatus are provided to improve optical efficiency and reduce the size of a recording/reproducing system by reducing the number of parts for splitting polarized light. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup unit(100) comprises a first division combiner(30) and a detection unit(70a,70b). The first division combiner receives polarized light reflected from a second division combiner(40) and passes a part of the light while reflecting the rest. The second division combiner passes only the light of specific polarizing direction. The detection unit generates a gap error signal corresponding to the polarized light passing through the first division combiner or the polarized light reflected to the first division combiner.
