    • PURPOSE: A cavitation damage prevention apparatus of a diesel engine fuel injection pump is provided to prevent cavitation generated before or after the opening of a barrel port at the late stage of fuel compression by employing a constant pressure valve installed in a deflector or barrel of a fuel injection pump. CONSTITUTION: A cavitation damage prevention apparatus of a diesel engine fuel injection pump comprises a constant pressure valve(110) including a valve member(111) which shuts a barrel port(104) to raise the internal pressure at the initial state of fuel compression by an upward motion of a plunger(103), a valve housing(112) which is installed in a deflector(106) or a barrel(102) of a pump housing(101) to support the valve member, and a spring(113) which is installed between the valve member and the valve housing to support the valve member. The constant pressure valve opens the barrel port when the internal fuel pressure of the barrel port exceeds an opening pressure.

    • A fuel injection pump (1) has a CSD (30) that modifies fuel injection timing by opening and closing a sub-port (36a) provided in a barrel. The opening and closing is made by a piston (35) operated by an actuator (38) for angle advancement. The communication and shut-off between the sub-port (36a) and a fuel pressure chamber (17) and between a main port (39) and the fuel pressure chamber (17) are performed by operating a plunger (32). In the fuel injection pump (1) above, at least one overflow-dedicated sub-port (36b) that is normally opened irrespective of the operation of the piston (35) is provided in the barrel. Further, the overflow-dedicated sub-port (36b) is provided between, with respect to the sliding direction of the plunger (32), the main port (39) and the sub-port (36a).

The plunger includes a release groove(102) which is communicated with a plunger chamber(202), a control edge(104) which is communicated with the release groove, and a damping groove(130) which is connected to the top of the plunger or the release groove in order to provide a fine flow passage for fuel. The barrel communicates the plunger chamber with an oil feed/discharge chamber and has a spill port(206) which contacts the control edge to release the pressure of the plunger chamber. Before the pressure release, the damping groove contacts the spill port to form a fine flow passage for a fuel from the plunger chamber to the spill port.
