    • A spinal rod (1 0) characterized by a time-varying stiffness. The rod comprises a first member (22,28,34,48,52,66,74,84,86,92,94) and at least one second member (24,26,35,40,44,50,54,60,68,72,76,82,90) that is mechanically coupled to the first member through a time-varying interface (30,36,38,56,58,59,80). The interface features a binding mechanism that degrades after surgical installation. For instance, the interface may be bioabsorbable and dissolve upon exposure to bodily fluids. In another instance, the second member may be comprised of a bioabsorbable material. In another embodiment, the interface may fail under cyclic loadig. In another embodiment, degradation of the bioabsorbable material may be inhibited through the application of a current source. The second member may be disposed within the first member. Alternatively, the first member and the second member may be disposed aside one another. The first member and the second member may be substantially similar in shape. One or more bioabsorbable plugs (62,66) may be used to at least temporarily seal the second member from bodily fluids once the spinal rod is installed. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009

    • PURPOSE: A catheter having an electrode strip and a medical treatment apparatus using the same are provided to attach an electrode array easily and economically to a probe without forming plural bores on the probe or using a wire between the electrodes. CONSTITUTION: A medical treatment apparatus for diagnosing a body cavity of a mammalian subject includes a long probe and an electrode strip(60). The long probe includes an outer surface and a distal portion, which is adapted for insertion into the body cavity. The electrode strip includes a long insulating substrate(64), a plurality of electrodes(62), and a conductive material(50). The long insulating substrate includes distal and proximal ends and is wrapped around the distal portion of the probe so as to define a helix having a length between the ends. The electrodes are arranged along length of the helix and fixed on the substrate. The conductive material is coupled with the electrodes from a proximal portion to the distal portion of the probe to communicate with a circuit.
