    • The invention concerns an economical hydraulic vehicle braking system with an anti-lock arrangement, by means of which system wheel-braking pressures in front wheel brakes and rear wheel brakes connected to a diagonal braking circuit of a four-wheeled vehicle can be varied individually in order to prevent or eliminate the risk of the wheels' locking. The anti-lock arrangement comprises one return pump per braking circuit. According to the invention, the anti-lock braking arrangement (15) is equipped with a total of four electrically controllable valves. In each of the braking circuits (I, II) there is a first valve (28, 29) between the brake master cylinder (2) and a front wheel brake (7, 8) and a second valve (30, 31) between the brake master cylinder (2) and the rear wheel brake (11, 12). All the valves take the form of normally open valves which can be closed electrically. The input (49) of each return pump (32, 33) is connected directly to the front wheel brakes (7, 8) and indirectly, by means of throttle devices (35, 36), to the rear wheel brakes (11, 12). Non-return valves (37, 38), which can be opened in the direction of the inputs (49), can be provided in series with the throttle devices (35, 36). The anti-lock braking arrangement (15) is of economical construction and enables rear wheel brake pressures to be higher than front wheel brake pressures when the system is operating in anti-lock braking mode, in order to improve the braking effect, e.g. when travelling on icy roads.
