    • According to an embodiment of the present invention, a slider design (409) is presented that provides improved protection for the head/sensor (613) of the slider (409). In one embodiment, the design of the slider (409) is such that ESD protection is provided during the slider wafer (407) process, the "back-end" processes (e.g., when the completed slider/head is incorporated into an HGA), and during operation in a disk drive or the like. In this embodiment, a conductive film (403) is provided that surrounds the insulating-material slider substrate (407). The conductive film (403) provides a grounding path during the wafer fabrication processes. This conductive layer (403) may be further patterned during head fabrication to provide a ground path for back-end fabrication processes. A conductive stripe may be added for discharging debris in the slider-to-disk interface.

    • PURPOSE: A slider for high-density magnetic recording purpose is provided to realize an ABS(Air Bearing Surface) in 2-layered U-shaped rail shape on a leading edge, and to expand a 2-layered main compression pad extended over by 2 external compression pads from a trailing edge of the ABS, thereby implementing an improved slider design. CONSTITUTION: A U-shaped rail(440) is expanded from a leading edge of a slider on an ABS(430). The U-shaped rail(440) is in 2-layered structure with the first surface(442) and the second surface(444) having a different level from the first surface(442). A main compression pad(450) is in 2-layered structure with the first surface(452) and the second surface(454) having a different level from the first surface(452). Two external compression pads(460) are extended over the main compression pad(450), and are located at the same level as the second surface(454) of the main compression pad(450).
