    • Variable frequency sawtooth waveforms are often utilized as an excitation signal in a digital musical synthesizer. A problem exists at lower sampling rates in such systems due to an aliasing problem which occurs at frequencies near the Nyquist rate. Low pass filtering may be utilized to mask this problem; however, low pass filtering is very time consuming to implement in a digital signal processor. The method and apparatus of the present invention reduces the upper harmonic content of a sawtooth waveform by proportionally converting the sawtooth waveform to a triangle waveform in response to variations in the frequency of the sawtooth waveform. This is accomplished by adding a selectable offset to the sawtooth waveform and then taking the absolute value of the resultant waveform. By restoring this waveform to a zero offset, the sawtooth waveform excitation signal will be converted to a triangle waveform having a substantially reduced upper harmonic content. By varying the selectable offset in response to variations in the frequency of the sawtooth waveform, it is possible to efficiently vary the amount of conversion which occurs.

    • PURPOSE:To attain the fine control of the noise formant characteristic by giving the independent control to a skirt part and the band width of the noise formant characteristic on a simple constitution. CONSTITUTION:The white noise signal produced by a white noise generator 2 is transmitted through an LPF circuit part 3 and a relative noise generating part 16. Thus the frequency characteristic of the white noise signal is controlled according to the frequency characteristic of both parts 3 and 16 which are set independently of each other. A periodic waveform generating part 31 produces a periodic waveform having a frequency corresponding to the center frequency of a desired noise formant. A modulating multiplier 36 modulates a relevant periodic waveform signal with the noise signal undergone the control of its frequency characteristic. Then, the components of the noise signal emerge symmetrically at both sides bands of the formant center frequency. Thus the noise formant is obtained. The characteristic of a skirt part of the noise formant is controller with control of the frequency characteristic of the part 3. Meanwhile the band width characteristic of the noise formant is controlled with the characteristic of the part 16.
