    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous glass fiber molded body having a plurality of through-holes juxtaposed linearly in one direction which is suitable for applications such as a filter, and can be manufactured inexpensively by a simple method.
SOLUTION: This porous glass fiber molded body is manufactured by piling up a plurality of glass fibers or glass fiber precursors, or their strands, juxtaposing in one direction, and heat-treating them as it is under pressure, or heat-treating them after press molding to fuse the glass fibers or the glass fiber precursors leaving a gap between them. The obtained glass fiber molded body has a plurality of straw-like through-holes without branching arranged in one direction, the opening diameter of which can be made 10 μm or below.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical fiber having excellent ultraviolet resistant characteristic kept for a long time. SOLUTION: In the optical fiber for ultraviolet transmission which is formed by heating an optical fiber preform having a core and a clad and drawing, the core of the optical fiber preform contains at least a specific quantity of OH group and/or F and comprises silica glass satisfying following requirements (A) and (B) in the irradiation with 24 mJ/cm 2 ArF excimer laser at an ordinary temperature under atmospheric pressure with 2×10 6 shots and the outer periphery of the optical fiber has a coating layer formed by applying molten aluminium or the alloy thereof and solidifying. After providing a coating layer, a heat treatment of (C) is carried out. (A) An E' center and NBOCH do not be produced. (B) The E' center and NBOHC are formed. (C) A heat treatment is carried out at 350-450°C for ≥0.5 hr heat treatment time. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-profile high temperature electric furnace with a plate-like heating element having a minimized high temperature zone for heating part of a liner, tubular, plate-like or rod-like heated object up to a high temperature, particularly for heating part of an optical fiber up to a high temperature in a short time during heating work such as fusion bonding, drawing or core enlargement of the optical fiber.
SOLUTION: Three or five slits are alternately formed in the plate-like heating element having feeding parts at both ends in the cross direction of the heating element. Thereby, a high temperature heating part having a U-shape or a M-shape with the continued U-shape in view from the side face of the heating element and a smaller width is provided in a central region of the heating element. The linear, tubular, plate-like or rod-like heated object is inserted into the slit located at the center perpendicularly to the plate-like heating element for heating work. The low-profile high temperature electric furnace is provided with such a plate-like heating element.
