The 1st core groups 2-4 use a part of a track of the tape 1, and the 2nd core groups 5-7 use the remaining tracks. The distances S1, S2 and S3 among effective gaps of cores 2 and 5, 2 and 3 and 2 and 6 satisfy S3>S1>S2. In such a case, the signals are repetitively recorded and reproduced in a route of cores 2 5 3 6 4 7 2 or 2 7 4 6 3 5 2. Then no recording/reproducing is carried out between cores 2 and 3 as well as 5 and 6. Thus it is possible to obtain a multi-track magnetic head which can be miniaturized and perform recording of high density with excellent durability.
