    • The present invention relates to a method for treating a pulp suspension in which the suspension is rotated in a rotationally symmetrical, rapidly rotating and permeable screen basket so that the suspension is subjected to the influence of a centrifugal force and dewatered at the same time as the suspension is conveyed by a rotating screw along the inner wall of the screen basket. The invention is characterized in that the suspension is caused to rotate by means which are arranged at the entrance to the screen basket, and in that the outer edges of the said screw bear against or are immediately adjacent to the screen basket and rotate at a higher speed than does the screen basket so that the screw scrapes the inner wall of the screen basket. The invention also relates to a device for implementing the method, which device comprises a housing (12), a screen basket (20) which is rotatably arranged in the said housing (12) and which is provided with screen openings, a screw body (72) which is rotatably arranged in the said screen basket (20) and which is arranged with a screw blade (79), an inlet (59) to the said screen basket (20) for the pulp suspension which is to be treated, an outlet (46, 52) from the said screen basket (20) for the pulp suspension which has been treated, and on outlet (62, 64) from the said housing (12) for liquid which has been removed. The device is characterized in that the said screen basket (20) is able to be rotated, via a transmission (26) which is arranged with a gearing, by a drive element (30), in that the screw body is able to be rotated, via a transmission (84) which is arranged with a gearing, by the said drive element (30), in that the screw blade (79) of the said screw body (72) moves along the inner side of the screen basket (20), with the gearing of the transmissions (26,84) being chosen so that the screw body (72) rotates faster than does the screen basket (20), so that the screw blade (79) has a scraping effect on the inner side of the screen basket (20), and in that an element (102) for initiating rotation of the pulp suspension is arranged at the inlet (59) to the screen basket (20), which element (102) is able to cause the pulp suspension to rotate when it enters the said screen basket (20).

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum type refining or washing apparatus in which refining or washing efficiency of a pulp suspension or a food suspension is remarkably enhanced by filtration function of the rotary drum and by sucking force of a filtrate receptive cell.
      SOLUTION: This drum type refining or washing apparatus is constituted so as to define a filtrate receptive chamber 34 facing the outer peripheral surface of a rotary drum 1 by a plurality of the filtrate receptive cells 31 arranged in the peripheral direction of the outer peripheral surface of the rotary drum 1 laterally installed, provide a discharge port 32 for discharging the filtrate received in the filtrate receptive cell 31 through a rotary drum-forming wall into a liquid vessel 11 at one end opposite to the rotating direction of the drum of each cell 31, discharge a filtrate received in the filtrate receptive chamber 34 of the filtrate receptive cell 31 through the discharging port 32 into the liquid vessel 11 during an escaping process of the filtrate receptive cell 31 onto the liquid surface 17 of the liquid vessel 11 in the accordance with rotation of the rotary drum 1 and generate the filtrate sucking force directing toward the inside of the receptive chamber 34 at a rotary drum-forming wall to which which the receptive chamber 34 of the cell 31 faces by discharge of the filtrate.

The drum is rotated about a horizontal axis in a first direction so that the circumferential surface of the drum moves into contact with lime mud in a vat and a precoat layer formed on the drum, as well as an external layer of lime mud which forms a thickened lime mud cake when a vacuum is applied to the drum withdrawing liquid from the lime mud. The thickened external layer of lime mud cake is scraped from the drum at a second side of the vat, and at a first opposite side of the vat a first jet of liquid is directed onto the drum surface (e.g. at a pressure of about 30-100 bar) to remove a strip of the precoat layer, a third jet of liquid cleans the drum after removal of the precoat layer, and a second jet of liquid is directed onto the drum with sufficient intensity (e.g. a pressure of about 2-20 bar) to remove, by spreading and partially detaching, a strip from the thickened lime mud cake. Typically the second jet is operated substantially continuously, except when the first and third jets are operated, the first and third jets being operated at spaced time intervals (e.g. periodically or intermittently). The invention results in partial removal of the precoat with a gentle liquid jet, easy removal of the entire precoat layer because the precoat is not yet hardened at its location of movement, intermittent use of high pressure jets which extends the life of the high pressure apparatus in the wire forming the drum, and optimum ease of installation and maintenance of the spray nozzles.
