    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst enhanced in heat resistance in a high oxygen concn: atmosphere and excellent in high temp. durability by constituting amorphous composite oxide of alumina, titanium oxide and a catalyst noble metal element as a high heat-resistance catalyst. SOLUTION: Alumina and titanium oxide are mixed in a mol ratio of about 1/100-1/2 and a catalyst norble metal element such as platinum or rhodium is added to the resulting mixture in an amt. of about 20wt.% or less in terms of metal and these three components constitute amorphous composite oxide. By this method, the catalyst noble metal element is widely dispersed in alumina and titanium oxide large in specific surface area and heat resistance is enhanced and sintering at high temp. is hard to generate and, therefore, high ternary activity is obtained after high temp. endurance. If cerium oxide is mixed in addition to these three components, fluctuations of an air/fuel ratio condition are absorbed by oxygen occluding/discharge action of cerium and ternary activity in the vicinity of stoichiometry is enhanced.
