    • PURPOSE:To obtain a ceramic-metal conjugate prevented from developing debonding or cracking under heat cycle environment with thermal shock by jointing a specific ceramic sintered compact to either metallic copper, copper alloy, metallic aluminum or aluminum alloy. CONSTITUTION:First, magnesia powder or its mixture with spinel powder is incorporated with a sintering auxiliary followed by pressure molding and then sintering at 1200-1850 deg.C to obtain a ceramic substrate 10>=9.5X10 / deg.C in average thermal expansion coefficient as magnesia sintered compact or spinel-magnesia sintered compact. Second, silver-copper-based alloy foils containing an active metal and cut to specified shape are placed on both surfaces of this substrate followed by heat treatment at 850 deg.C for 15min at 5X10 Torr under a load of e.g. 0.3g/m through spacers, thus obtaining the objective substrate 20 where copper plates 18 are jointed to both the surfaces of the ceramic substrate 10 through an alloy layer (joint layer) 16, i.e., either active metal-contg. alloy layer, a solidified matter layer from a eutectic melt composed of copper and copper oxide, or layer of compound with the ceramic sintered compact component (s).
