    • PURPOSE:To obtain a road-surface-condition detecting method that can easily be installed and provides detection over a relatively-broad range, by deciding the state of a road surface on the basis of difference in direct reflection factor and diffused reflection factor of light on the road surface according to the state of the road surface and a road-surface temperature. CONSTITUTION:Of light projected from projector 1 and then reflected on road surface 4, light of direct reflection and that of diffused reflection are photodetected by photodetector 11 for direct reflection and photodetector 21 for diffused reflection respectively. Output signals of filters 14 and 24, containing information on the state of the road surface obtained from the light of direct reflection and that of diffused reflection, are input to comparators 15 and 16, and 25 and 26 respectively, thereby deciding one of the wet state, snow state and dry state. Further, microprocessor 40 classifies finally the state of the road by four kinds of dry, wet, frozen and snow states on the basis of the decision result of the road-surface state by the information from the light of direct reflection and that of diffused reflection, and a temperature detection signal from radiation thermometer 31. Thus, the state of the road surface can accurately be detected over a broad range.

    • PURPOSE:To accurately detect moisture on a road surface by judging the humidness of the road surface, utilizing the absorption of infrared rays by moisture. CONSTITUTION:Light is applied to a road surface through a flood light projector 12, and the rays diffusedly reflected by the road surface are received by a photoactive means 13. The visible-ray components of below 1.2mum in wavelength of the light received are reflected by a silicon plate 1, and received by a silicon photocell 17. The other components, that is, infrared rays of above 1.2mum in wavelength are received by a photoconductive cell 15. The detection output from the cell 17 is processed in comparators 22 and 23 through a BEP19, LPF21, and the like, and when the detection output is above a setting value V1 and below a setting value V2, that is V1-V2, a level output corresponding to the road surface condition is generated from terminals A, B, and C. On the other hand, the detection output from the cell 15 is processed in a comparator 34, and a high level judgment output corresponding to the humidness is generated from terminals D and E according to the absorption of infrared rays by moisture. Thus, logically processing the outputs from the terminals A-E permits snow, dry, water, or wet conditions on the road surface to be accurately sensed even when the snow is contaminated.

    • PURPOSE:To accurately know the dry, wet, snow cover and frozen states of road surfaces by discriminating the states of the road surface based on the photodetection signals of the specular and irregular reflected light of visible light from the surface and the irregular reflected light of infrared light. CONSTITUTION:A light projector 24 of a mercury arc lamp contg. not only visible light but also near infrared light in emission spectral, an irregular reflected light detector 25 including photodetectors 31, 32 for infrared light and visible light, a specular reflected light detector 26 including a photodetector 33 for visible light, and a thermometer 28 are mounted to a stanchion erected on one side of a road. The outputs from the photodetectors 25, 26 are removed of noise components by passing through a band-pass filter 35, after which they are rectified and are sent to comparators 41, 42, 43. The reference levels corresponding to the dry, wet and snow cover states of road surfaces have beforehand been set in these comparators, and the signals from the photodetectors are compared with these reference levels. The compared output signals thereof are sent to a logical circuit 44, and an arithmetic processing part 45, by which the above-mentioned states of the road surface are decided. The freezing state of the road surface is decided by the signal of the thermometer 28.
