CONSTITUTION:Descaling or surface conditioning of a stainless steel sheet prior to or during cold rolling is accomplished by mechanical grinding. The steel sheet is subjected in succession to scarfing to >=2 micron thickness in a soln. composed of 1 or >=2 kinds of an acid and salt. For example, about 200g/l sulfuric acid soln. or a soln. mixture of about 50g/l HNO3, and about 150g/l HCl soln. and about 100g/l FeCl soln. is used as the scarfing soln. If the scarfing amt. is =2 micron, more particularly >=3 micron.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate the difference in the surface roughness between both surfaces of a strip and to improve quality by adding one piece of work roll further to a tri-star rolling mill having 3-point screw down points thereby forming the 4th screw down point. CONSTITUTION:The 4th outside circumference work roll 6 is disposed in the position having a center connecting the respective centers of a central work roll 1 and the 3rd outside circumference work rolls 2C forming the 3rd screw down point 4C. The strip past the point 4C travels 1/2 around the circumference of the rolls 2C and passes through the 4th screw down point 4d formed between the rolls 2C and the roll 6. Since the surface of a strip in contact with the roll 6 at the point 4d is the surface on the roll 1 side and therefore it is easily possible to bring the surface roughness of the strip rolled thrice on the roll 1 side closer to the surface roughness of the surface rolled by the rolls 2C.

    • PURPOSE:To lighten the rolling load at rolling the strip, by interposing the center work roll between two outer work rolls, by backing up the center work roll with the backup roll, and by independently driving each of outer work rolls. CONSTITUTION:At rolling the metallic strip 9, the peripheral speed of outer work roll 2 is adjusted by the driver 12 so as to be equal to the linear speed of the strip 9 given by the tension roll 8; the peripheral speed of another outer work roll 2' is adjusted by the driver 12' so as to be a value determined from the thickness ratio of strip 9, 9', respectively before and after the rolling work; hereby, the peripheral speed of outer work roll 2' becomes equal to the linear speed of the strip 9' due to the tension roll 8'. Accordingly, the strip 9 winds round outer work rolls 2, 2', without causing slip. The center work roll 1, and backup rolls 3, 3', receive upward reaction through the strip 9', and the center work roll 1 tends to cause bending; however, since the large diameter backup roll 3' of great rigidity supports the center work roll 1 through the small diameter backup roll 3, the rolling load to be impressed on edges of the strip 9, 9', is lightened, and the edge drop is diminished.
