    • PURPOSE: To enable the further effective utilization of a by-product oil containing diarylalkane and obtained by the alkylation of a monocylic aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin, by converting the diarylalkane to the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and a triaryldialkane by disproportionation reaction.
      CONSTITUTION: A by-product oil fraction having a boiling point of 260W320°C, containing diarylalkane, and obtained in the production of alkynated monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as ethylbenzene, ethyltoluene, etc. from an olefin such as ethylene, etc. and a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene, etc., is disproportionated in the presence of a disproportion catalyst to obtain (A) a monocyclic aromatic htdrocarbon fraction having lower boiling point than the above by-product oil and (B) a fraction having a boiling point of 350W450°C and containing triaryldialkane.       CONSTITUTION: Isobutylbenzene is reacted with acetaldehyde in the presence of sulfuric acid catalyst to give novel 1,1-bis(p-isobutylphenyl)ethane, which is then catalytically decomposed in the presence of a protonic acid and/or solid acid catalyst at 200W650°C to give isobutylbenzene (reutilized as a starting material) and p-isobuthylstyrene. The resultant p-isobuthylstyrene is then reacted with hydrogen and CO in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst at 40W150°C to give the aimed compound.
      EFFECT: The raw material is safe, stable and inexpensive, and the preparation is carried out only in three steps with simple operation.
      USE: A precursor for α-(p-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid.
