摘要： PURPOSE:To enhance the reliability of a metal carrier catalyst and to extend a life period to a large extent by generating sufficient pressure contact force between the layers of a spirally wound strip like material and connecting a center electrode and an outer cylinder by a support means and preventing the movement of the center electrode with respect to the outer cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A strip like material 7 constituting the metal carrier 3 of a catalyst is formed by preliminarily integrally bonding corrugated metal foil and flat metal foil and spirally winding both foils around a center electrode 6 and, since the center electrode 6 and an outer cylinder 2 are relatively fixed through the tightly wound strip like material by a support rod 10, sufficiently large pressure contact force is generated between the layers of the laminated strip like material 7. Since large tension acts on the flat metal foil and both ends of the flat metal foil are attached to the center electrode 6 and the outer cylinder 2, even when the corrugated metal foil is ready to generate a scoping phenomenon, the movement of the corrugated metal foil in the axial direction and the radius direction of the wound strip like material is prevented by the flat metal foil unified with the corrugated metal foil and the generation of the scoping phenomenon is prevented.

And a spark gap 71 is formed between the grounding electrode 6 and the tip 23 of the core electrode 2. Also, an auxiliary gap 72 is formed between the core electrode 2 and the conductor cylinder 4. And a relationship between the length G of the gap 71 and the length L of the auxiliary gap 72 is so set as to be shown in the expression. According to the aforesaid construction, it is possible to obtain a spark plug for an internal combustion engine having high performance with lowered discharge voltage.

CONSTITUTION:A corrugated plate 1 and a flat plate 2, each having an insulating film formed on the both surfaces, are stacked together and rolled up to obtain a honeycomb like metal contact carrier 3. The corrugated plate 1 and the flat plate 2 are junctioned in the counter 3a and the peripheral area 3b of the catalyst carrier 3 so that the plates can be energized. In addition, an area 3c between the junctioned areas 3a, 3b is made to be a non-contact area. As the electric resistance of the non-contact area 3c is high, the area 3c becomes heated, if a voltage is applied to an area between a positive electrode 4 and a negative electrode 6.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain misfiring by controlling fuel injection and ignition and to prevent deterioration of emission caused by discharge of unburned fuel. SOLUTION: A cylinder direct injection type injector can carry out pilot injection and main injection. In this arrangement, an energizing circuit also serving as an ignition checking circuit for a spark plug 3 is changed over from an igniter 5 into a flame ion current detecting means 7 after discharge for ignition, and accordingly, a relatively low voltage is applied to the spark plug 3 from a low voltage power source 8 so as to check whether pilot combustion occurs or not. If pilot combustion is detected, main injection is carried out. If no pilot combustion is detected, the main injection is inhibited while for example, pilot injection and ignition are repeated so as to ignite fuel. It is noted that the control device incorporates a control mode in which main injection is carried out even though no pilot combustion is detected, and in this mode, ignition is repeated after a short time elapses from the time of main injection in order to ignite fuel.

The spacer 19 is not rolled into a part which constitutes the intermediate part of the winding form. That is, the width of the spacer 19 is smaller than the axial length of the paired foils and is rolled into the upstream lateral end part in exhaust gas flow direction.
