    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cordierite-based honeycomb structure capable of reducing the wall thickness, raising the cell density and contributing to an improvement in moldability at the time of extrusion molding (especially the fluidity and shape retaining properties), mechanical strength (hydrostatic breaking strength) and catalyst supporting characteristics. SOLUTION: This method for producing a thin-wall cirdierite-based honeycomb structure comprises adding a molding assistant to a raw material for conversion into the cordierite, kneading the resultant mixture, providing a raw material batch, then molding the raw material bath by the extrusion molding, drying the molded product and then baking the dried molded product. The resultant honeycomb structure comprises a crystalline phase consisting essentially of the cordierite. In this case, the raw material batch for conversion into the cordierite contains >=65 wt.% flat or platy crude raw material for conversion into the cordierite, composed of talc, kaolin and aluminum hydroxide and having water of crystallization and the respective BET specific surface areas of the crude raw materials for the conversion into the cordierite are 7-18 m /g for the talc, 14-22 m /g for the kaolin and 6-18 m /g for the aluminum hydroxide.
