    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for processing a long period fiber grating for accurately controlling periodic variation of an optical fiber diameter in the axis direction of an optical fiber to efficiently process the optical fiber irrespective of the types of the optical fiber, and the long period fiber grating with less variation of characteristics.SOLUTION: An optical fiber 1 is fixed at two parts; a heating source 15 is moved along the longitudinal direction with respect to the optical fiber 1 which is located between the fixed two parts to heat the optical fiber 1; a pulling operation for pulling the optical fiber 1 by a predetermined distance and/or a compression operation for compressing the optical fiber 1 by a predetermined distance are intermittently repeated; and a changed part of the outer diameter of the optical fiber 1 is periodically formed in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber 1.
