Pressure oil is supplied through the oil passage 16 of the tool 15 into the preceding end part of the tool to swell a pressure oil chamber 18 in the preceding end part, thereby compressing the bottom part 13 of the groove 12. In this state, the shaft 11 is rotated by which the bottom part 13 of the groove 12 is rolled and pressed to cause work hardening. According to this method, only the part 13 is subjected to the work hardening easily without hardening the side wall parts 14 which are not required to be hardened without using any working machine having power of large capacity.
