    • PURPOSE:To obviate the generation of slips between rolls at a high speed and under high draft by limiting the equiv. roll surface roughness expessed by a specific equation of the work roll and driving intermediate rolls of a rolling mill. CONSTITUTION:The equiv. roll surface roughness given by the left side of the equation (Raw: the average roughness of the plate way of the surface of the roll 1, Ra1: the average roughness in the part equiv. to the plate way on the surface of the roll 2) of the rolls 1, and 2 is maintained at >=0.1mum in a method for rolling a plate material with a rolling mill provided with >=1 sets of roll clusters each consisting of the work rolls 1, driving intermediate rolls 2 and backup rolls 3, 4. Then the coefft. of friction between the rolls is maintained at a required value or above, and the slip between the rolls is prevented. Then no chattering in rolling is generated and the rolling at a high speed is made possible. The rolled plate material having excellent surface characteristics without any chatter mark is obtd.; further the rolling torque is transmitted with high efficiency from the rolls 2 to 1; therefore, high draft rolling is accomplished.

    • PURPOSE: To economically avoid an edge rupture by making a coefficient of friction between the surface of a rolling roll coming into contact with the side edge of a metallic plate and the metallic plate lower than that of the center part. CONSTITUTION: A metallic plate S is rolled by work rolls 1. For instance, the surface roughness Ra of a range A is set to 0.90μm, the surface roughness Ra of a range B to 0.45μm, and the width (e) of the side edge of a steel strip to 100mm. The enlargement of a crack does not occur on the steel strip cold- rolled in this way. That is, a rolling is performed after making a coefficient of friction between the side edge of a width of 5 to 300mm including the edge of the metallic plate S and the surface of a rolling roll 1 coming into contact with this side edge lower than a coefficient of friction in the center part except the side edge. Rolling mill lubricant more than that of the center part is supplied on the side edge. Also, the rolling mill lubricant with a concentration higher than that of the center part is supplied to the side edge. Consequently, the productivity of the rolling can be improved.
