    • PURPOSE:To obtain a fiber reinforced metal matrix composite free from pores or the like, at the time of laminating prepreg sheets of inorganic long fibers and matrix metallic foils and executing hot pressing, by impregnating and interposing metallic powder having the m.p. higher than that of the matrix metal into the inorganic long fibers. CONSTITUTION:In the method for manufacturing a fiber reinforced metal matrix composite by laminating prescribed numbers of prepreg sheets of inorganic long fibers and matrix metallic foils, heating this laminate and thereafter executing pressurizing and forming by using a hot press, by impregnating and interposing metallic powder having the m.p. higher than that of the matrix metal into the inorganic long fibers as prepreg sheets to manufacture the fiber reinforced metal matrix composite. In this way, in the state where the metallic powder grains widen the distance between the reinforcing fibers, i.e., in the state similar to that where opening has been executed, the softened or partially dissolved matrix metallic foils are impregnated into the fibers, and next, the metallic powder grains are plastically deformed and fill pores, by which the fiber reinforced metal matrix composite having a dense structure can be obtd.
