    • PURPOSE:To improve the surface quality of a product by forming the surface layer part of a block of a refractory material and constituting the intermediate part of the block of a heat insulating material having a flow passage for cooling fluid. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer part 2 of the block 1 is formed of the thin- walled refractory material 5 and a base part 3 constituted of a cylindrical support frame 8 is disposed. The intermediate part 4 of the block is formed of the heat insulating material 6 such as ceramics at the intermediate of the surface layer part 2 and the base part 3 and flow passages 7 for cooling air are disposed in the required position thereof. Many pieces of such blocks 1 are connected by connecting pieces 9 to form an endless cooling block belt, thereby constituting an endless track type continuous and horizontal casting machine. The molten steel supplied from a tundish is prevented from being quickly cooled by the intermediate block 4 having the surface layer refractory material 5 and heat insulating material 6 of the block 1 and therefore the solidified shell grows gradually. The generation of the wave shape on the surface of a continuously cast steel plate is thus obviated and the surface quality is improved.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a horizontal type continuous casting machine which permits the simple and easy size setting of a casting mold by pressing the side faces on one side of the metallic blocks of upper, lower, right and left endless belts to the outside surfaces of the proximity blocks thereby forming the casting mold and changing optionally the width or thickness of the casting mold without exchanging the endless belts. CONSTITUTION:The end faces 19b, 20b, 21b, 22b on one side of the metallic blocks 15, 16, 17, 18 in the upper, lower, right and left endless belts 19, 20, 21, 22 are pressed to the outside surfaces 19a, 20a, 21a, 22a of the proximity metallic blocks to form the continuous casting mold. The mutual positions of the belts 19, 20, 21, 22 are changed, by which the size of the casting mold is changed and set as desired. The need for exchanging the belts 19, 20, 21, 22 is eliminated and the changing and setting of the mold size are made extremely simple and easy.

    • PURPOSE:To suppress the waving of a pouring basin and to produce a steel plate having good quality by applying horizontally a magnetic field to the surface of the surface of the pouring basin in a continuous casting machine and conducting electricity thereto in the horizontal direction and the direction intersecting orthogonally with the magnetic field. CONSTITUTION:This continuous casting machine produces the steel plate 5 by storing the molten steel 3 supplied from a nozzle 6 to form the pouring basin 8 above a pair of cooling rolls 1, 2 disposed to face each other apart at a prescribed spacing, rotating the rolls 1, 2 to move the solidified layer of the molten steel 3 formed atop the same and casting the steel plate. The magnetic field is formed forward and backward in the horizontal direction to the surface part of the above-mentioned pouring basin 8 by coils 7 provided before and behind the same and the electricity is conducted between a pair of electrodes 9 and 10 provided on the right and left in the direction intersecting orthogonally therewith to generate the electromagnetic force in the pouring basin 8 from above to below. The waving of the surface of the basin 8 is thus dissipated and the generation of defects such as double skins and cracks of the steel plate 5 is prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a solidified shell in a gate for the molten metal on twin-rolls in the stage of casting continuously a steel plate, etc. with a twin-roll type continuous casting machine by passing electric current to the molten steel flowing down from a tundish and applying a magnetic field to the molten metal flow. CONSTITUTION:The molten steel 5 is supplied from the tundish 3 through nozzle, 4, 4' into the molten steel pouring basin constituted of side gates 2, 2' provided on the both sides of the twin rolls 1 and the rolls 1 are rotated, by which a steel ingot 8 is produced. Magnetic field generators 7, 7' such as coils are installed alongside the gates 2, 2' to form the magnetic field. Electricity is at the same time conducted to the molten steel 5 in the tundish as the anode and the rolls 1 or the ingot 8 as the cathode, by which the molten steel flows 9, 9' from the nozzles 4, 4' are shifted toward the gates 2, 2' accoring to the Fleming's left- hand rule. The steel ingot 8 having good quality is thus produced without cooling of the molten metal in contact with the side gates and the consequent formation of the solidified shell.
