    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a decline in efficiency in order to prevent a decline in efficiency caused by degradation of a catalyst of an internal combustion engine in its long-term operation, and control an engine so that high efficiency can be maintained. SOLUTION: A catalyst 3 is arranged at an exhaust pipe 2 of an engine 1 of the device. Sensors 7, 8 for detecting exhaust condition are arranged at the front and the rear of the catalyst 3. The sensors 7, 8 can be, for example, oxygen sensors of which output changes in step at λ= 1, or a sensor of which output changes in proportion to an air-fuel ratio. The values detected by both of the sensors are taken into a control unit 9. Then purification efficiency and a degree of degradation of the catalyst are estimated by the compared results, and the engine is controlled so that efficiency can be optimized. Thus, since a decline in efficiency of the catalyst caused by its long-term operation is accurately detected, and the engine is controlled so that the decline in efficiency can be avoided, high exhaust-purifying properties can be maintained.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supercharging system for increasing the combustion air pressure for an engine, capable of reducing the loss in high-supercharging in an engine having a higher expansion ratio and the like and improving the engine efficiency. SOLUTION: A supercharging system has a compressor 82 driven by an exhaust turbine 81, and a mechanical compressor 86 driven by an engine output shaft, which are both centrifugal compressors. A turbine and a front stage catalytic converter 85 are provided at the downstream side of an exhaust pipe 80. At the start-up and warming-up of an engine, since the exhaust temperature to a catalytic converter 83 drops, a selector valve 84 stops the supply of exhaust gas to the exhaust turbine and guides exhaust gas to the front stage catalytic converter, to promote the purification of exhaust emissions. At that time the mechanical compressor is driven for supercharging. After the start-up and warming-up, the selector valve is shifted to direct exhaust gas to the turbine, and then the mechanical supercharging is stopped. As a power converting mechanism for the mechanical compressor, a planetary gear device with variable transmission gear ratio or a fluid-driven device is provide.
