    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily measure a distance between an own vehicle and a vehicle ahead, a relative direction and relative speed by installing a wire reel in the own vehicle and detecting a length of a drawn wire, an angle and speed when the wire is stretched between the own vehicle and the vehicle ahead. SOLUTION: A base 3 with a wire reel 1 rotatably placed in a horizontal direction is attached to a front of an own vehicle, and a tip of a wire 2 is connected to a rear of a vehicle ahead. A count output Co from a wire length detection part 4 and an output signal Ro from a rotary encoder during travel are input to an ECU of an automatic follower for example, wherein a length of the wire fed out from the wire reel 1 at that time and an angle of the wire 2 with respect to a direction of the own vehicle are obtained to sense a distance between vehicle from the length of the wire 2 and also obtains relative speed of the own vehicle and the vehicle ahead from a change in the length of the wire 2 per time unit for calculating an appropriate distance between the vehicles. Further a relative direction with respect to the vehicle ahead is known from an angle of the wire 2, so that the vehicle can be driven while maintaining the appropriate distance.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a smooth drive control of brake by obtaining a correction value of acceleration when a vehicle is at a constant speed or below, subtracting it from a target acceleration level, and performing compensation by the creep part of target value of brake pressure control. SOLUTION: Under control of ECU 3, a distance of a vehicle to an obstacle in the forward direction and a relative speed are obtained by a radar 1, and a target acceleration level is obtained from a preliminarily set table for the follow-up with the distance to the obstacle being maintained constant. In order to compensate the acceleration part by the creep running of automatic transmission of the vehicle, the compensation value of acceleration when the vehicle is at a constant speed or below is obtained from a preliminarily set map. The obtained compensation of acceleration is subtracted from the target acceleration and the target acceleration subjected to the creep compensation is obtained. Accordingly a smooth stop and start of vehicle can be made.
