    • PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound having excellent fragrance economically, in an improved selectivity, by contacting eugenol or its derivative with an isomerization catalyst comprising iridium tetrachloride or its monohydrate.
      CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II can be prepared easily, in a remarkably excellent selectivity (about 97W99%) and high yield (about ≥99%), by contacting the eugenol of formula I (R is H, 1W6C alkyl, ≤8C aralkyl, or 1W6C acyl) or its derivative with the easily available and preparable catalyst of formula IrCl

      2 O (n is 0 or 1) in the presence or absence of water. The amount of the catalyst is preferably about 0.001W0.1wt%, especially about 0.01W0.1wt%, based on the compound of formula I . Preferably, the reaction is carried out in the presence of water to attain rapid reaction.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain nootkatone useful as a perfume industrially advantageously and selectively in high purity and yield in one step, by catalytically oxidizing valencene with oxygen or a gas containg the oxygen in an inert organic solvent in the presence of an organic heavy metallic catalyst.
      CONSTITUTION: Valencene of formula 2 is catalytically oxidized with oxyen or a gas containing the oxygen in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene, in the presence of an organic heavy metallic catalyst, preferably an organometallic compound of Group VIII, e.g. Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd or Ir, etc. to give nootkatone of formula 1 having a grapefruitlike fragrance in one step without passing through an intermediate step of hydroperoxide in danger of causing violent explosion by the technique of industrially advantageous catalytic oxidation industrially and easily in high conversion and yield. Compounds of formulas 3 and 4 formed as by-products in the above-mentioned reaction can be easily converted into the compound of formula 1.

      CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula III having a cis-ratio of ≥93% is prepared in a yield of as high as ≥80%, by contacting 8-formyloctanoic acid alkyl ester of formula I (R is lower alkyl) with 3-tetrahydropyranyl-oxypropylene triphenyl phosphorane in an organic solvent to obtain 12-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)-cis-9-dedecenoic acid alkyl ester of formula II (a novel compound) in high yield and purity, and contacting the compound with an acid catalyst at 5W80°C for 0.5W24hr preferably in an alcohol solvent.
      USE: Synthetic intermediate for 9-dodecen-12-olide which is known as a perfumery component of citron having a sweet mint-note fruity smell.
