    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which can form an optically anisotropic layer hardly delaminated from a support. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition contains the liquid crystal compound having a functional group capable of forming a new chemical bond and a volume expansion agent. The volume shrinkage caused by the formation of a new chemical bond is compensated by the volume expansion caused by the volume expansion agent. Preferably, the composition contains a liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group, the volume expansion agent in which the number of molecules is increased by bond cleavage, and a polymerization initiator. The action of the polymerization initiator causes the polymerization of the liquid crystal compound and the bond cleavage of the volume expansion agent.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate which hardly causes defect and contributes to the enlargement of a viewing angle of a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The retardation plate has an optical anisotropic layer made of at least one kind of liquid crystal compound and a liquid crystal composition including at least one kind of compound selected from compounds expressed by the ordinary formula (I) or the ordinary formula (II). In the formula (I), X presents a trivalent group selected from CR 1 , nitrogen atom, phosphorus atom and P=O, R 1 presents hydrogen atom or a prescribed substituent and Y 1 to Y 3 respectively present hydrogen atom or prescribed substituents, wherein at least two are substituted or nonsubstituted allyl groups. In the formula (II), M 1 and M 2 represent respectively trivalent groups selected from CR 2 , nitrogen atom and phosphorus atom, R 2 presents hydrogen atom or a prescribed substituent and L 1 to L 3 present respectively prescribed bivalent connection groups, wherein two selected from L 1 , L 2 and L 3 are preferably connected.
