With this constitution, even if the pinion-pushing out solenoid 7 and the relay 8 for carrying the electric current to the motor are separated as the separate body, a dimension is not increased in two directions on the outside in the radial direction of the motor 2. Since the length in the axial direction of putting both together does not exceed the total length of the motor 2, the mounting characteristic equal to a conventional starter having an electromagnetic switch, can be secured.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure durability of a centrifugal clutch in an engine starting device.
      SOLUTION: The centrifugal clutch is an outer cam roller clutch; and a roller 9a races while sliding on an outer peripheral surface of an inner 9b and thereby an outer 9c and the inner 9b are free and power transmission from the outer 9c to the inner 9b can be cut off when an engine is cranked and a rotating speed of the outer 9c exceeds a rotating speed of the inner 9b. The centrifugal clutch is set so that an engine rotating speed when the product (PV value) of a surface pressure P generated between the roller 9a and the inner 9b and a relative rotating speed V of the roller 9a and the inner 9b is lower than an engine rotating speed which is used most frequently. Thus, the PV value itself can be reduced, and the usage frequency at travel of a vehicle can be reduced (a whole time period when the roller 9a races can be reduced). Therefore, an abrasion amount of the roller 9a can be reduced, and the durability can be sufficiently secured.

Travel speed of the plunger 8 therefore is reduced and impact force generated when a movable contact 9 gets into contact with the motor contact 2 is weakened. Consequently, bumping noise generated when the contacts bump each other can be reduced. Although electric current to the attraction coil 6 is turned off after the motor contact 2 is closed, electric current to a holding coil 7 is kept on to hold the plunger 8 in a state of closing the motor contact 2.
