    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a hydraulic pressure type friction engagement device, capable of reducing gear change shock, while securing gear change responsiveness, regardless of manufacturing irregularity or aging change of a piston stroke. SOLUTION: This controller is for controlling engagement states of a clutch 12, in which a piston 16 is moved by operating fluid pressure-controlled by a linear solenoid valve 28, so that a plurality of friction plates 14 are engaged with each other by pushing pressure of the piston 16. The controller for the clutch is provided with a constant pressure stand-by control means 86 to charge operating fluid to the clutch 12, holding the operating fluid at a specific operating pressure P1 by the linear solenoid valve 28, a charge completion determining means 92 to determine when charging of operating fluid to the clutch 12 is actually completed, an elapsed time determining means 94 to determine time T from start of charging the operating fluid to the clutch 12 till completion of charging, and a correcting means 96 to correct the operating pressure P1 based on the time T.
