    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the output efficiency while lowering the pumping loss by controlling the driving pulse of an intake and exhaust valves so that the exhaust valve is driven in the same direction with the intake valve through a lap position of the intake and the exhaust valves before the intake valve arrives at the lap position when the intake valve is being to be opened in the condition that the exhaust valve is opened. SOLUTION: Variable valve mechanism 40, 41 for controlling the opening and closing operation of an intake valve 10 and an exhaust valve 11 are provided, and these are controlled by a variable valve control means 30 on the basis of the signal from an operating condition detecting means 64. At this stage, the valves are controlled so that the lifted variable is maintained for the predetermined period when the valve opening operation of the intake valve 10 starts at a crank angle, at which the exhaust valve 11 is opened yet, and when the valve opening achieves the predetermined value near the maximum lifted variable. Namely, an intake and an exhaust strokes of the intake and the exhaust valves 10, 11 are set at a nearly rectangular shape so as to continuously maintain the predetermined quantity of the lifted variable for the predetermined period near the maximum value, and a buffer area is set at the time of valve unit seating operation, and with this structure, the gas in the combustion chamber can be efficiently exchanged.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus in which the pulsation of an air current can be measured without delay and precisely by a method wherein, on the basis of a flow-rate detection signal whose response delay is restored, a threshold value is detected and the direction of the flow of the air is estimated on the basis of the crossing of the threshold value with the flow-rate detection signal whose response delay is restored. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 40 compensates the response delay of a flow-rate detection signal which is obtained from a heat-ray probe 11 and which contains a response delay. It sets a threshold value on the basis of the maximum value and the minimum value of the detection signal whose response delay is compensated, and it judges a reverse-flow section. According to the judged reverse-flow section, the detection signal is compensated, and an air flow rate is measured precisely. That is to say, in order to reduce a measuring error at the pulsation of the air flow rate, the response delay of the flow-rate detection signal obtained from the heat-ray probe 11 is restored. A threshold value is computed on the basis of the detection signal whose response delay is restored. The direction of the flow of the air is estimated on the basis of the crossing of the threshold value with the detection signal whose response delay id restored. Thereby, a following-flow section is discriminated from the reverse-flow section without delay. A correction processing operation can be performed, and the measuring accuracy of an average air flow rate can be increased when a reverse flow is generated.
