    • PURPOSE:To cool a piston efficiently and prevent the deterioration of pressure oil by forming a passage groove between inner and outer pistons for making pressure oil feed and discharge passages continuous to each other, and causing the pressure oil to circulate into an upper fluid chamber via said passage groove under a low compression ratio condition. CONSTITUTION:In order to obtain a small compression ratio at the high load and the like of an internal combustion engine, the opening of a pressure regulating valve 47 is made small via a control circuit 48 and pressure oil of high pressure is supplied from a main oil passage 34 to a hydraulic fluid chamber 25. As a spool valve 26 consequently moves left, the capacity of an upper fluid chamber 31 decreases and an outer piston 21 moves downward, thereby making a low compression ratio available. In this case, the pressure oil in the hydraulic chamber 25 is made to flow from the second oil passage 36 to a passage groove 50 and discharged from the fourth oil passage 38 without any change. In this way, the pressure oil is circulated in a space between the crown lower surface 21b of the outer piston 21 and the upper surface 29b of an inner piston 29. The crown part of the piston 21, therefore, can be cooled efficiently and the deterioration of the pressure oil can be prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To aim at reduction of the generation of hammering and overshooting in an engine by making the difference in level between the planes of action of cams smaller as the quantity of lift of cams becomes larger in the case of a cam, which is provided with a plurality of planes of action, for varying the inclination of a lever touching the rear of a rocker arm. CONSTITUTION:On the rear of a rocker arm 13, whose one end touches a cam 11, and the other end touches the edge of an intake and exhaust valve 12, is provided a lever 15 whose one end is supported by a pivot 19, and the other end is caused to touch a control cam 20, and then, the valve timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valve 12 is controlled by way of varying the position of a supporting point on the rear of the rocker arm 13 by varying the inclination of the lever 15. The cam 20 is provided with a plurality of control faces 20a-20e, and the differences in level between each of these control faces 20a-20e are set to smaller as the quantity of lift becomes larger. Thereby, in an operating range where the quantity of lift becomes larger, the lubricating oil is fed in a larger quantity so that the generation of overshooting in the case of controlling the cam can be prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To make the rotation angle respond to the operating quantity adequately even though there is a load fluctuation in the peak torque and the like, and to simplify the composition, by composing a driving device between a control device and an intake and exhaust valves lift variable device with a DC motor. CONSTITUTION:The feedback control system of an intake and exhaust valves lift variable device 20 has a driving device to rotate a cam control shaft linked to a lift control cam in the device 20 through an elastic member. It also has an object position setting device to set an object position of cam control shaft according to the engine operation condition, a position detecting device 24 to detect the actual position of the cam control shaft, and a control device 25 to control the driving device to unify the actual position and the object position. Furthermore, the operation condition of the engine is detected by an operation condition detecting device 22. In such a composition, the driving device is composed by a DC motor 21. By a large restricting torque of the DC motor 21, the rotation position is controlled adequately, as well as the cam control shaft is held securely.

    • PURPOSE:To improve an output and to reduce fuel consumption, by a method wherein, in an engine having at least two intake valves per a cylinder, the opening and the closing timing and a valve lift amount of each of the two intake valves are steppedly variable depending upon the operating condition of an engine. CONSTITUTION:Main and auxiliary intake valves 26 and 27, opening and closing main and auxiliary intake ports 23 and 24 of each cylinder, are driven through a variable tappet mechanism 30 by means of a driving cam 31. The variable tappet mechanism 30 has a locker arm 32 supported rockably by forcing a back 32A, formed in a bent manner, into fulcrum contact with an under surface 33A of a lever 33. The lever 33 has the one end, the upper surface of which a lift cam control cam 34 is forced into contact with, and the other end part rockably supported to a bracket 37 of a cylinder head 36 through a hydraulic pivot 35. The lift control cam 34 has plural cam surfaces 34a-34b having different valve lift amounts, and controls a rotation amount through a control shaft 40 with the aid of a stepping motor, and this enables a valve lift amount to be controlled throughout a multistage.
