    • PURPOSE:To obtain optional shutter speed and to attain a quick shutter motion by opening a liquid crystal shutter after a mechanical shutter is opened, and closing the mechanical shutter after the liquid crystal shutter is closed or the moment it was closed. CONSTITUTION:The behind lens shutter (mechanical shutter) 4 mechanically opening and closing plural vanes is provided behind a lens group 2, and the liquid crystal shutter 5 employing a ferromagnetic liquid crystal 9 is provided behind the mechanical shutter 4. An action circuit is provided inside a camera, and a control part 17 is constituted of the action circuit, a control circuit 13, a mechanical shutter driving circuit 14 and a liquid crystal shutter driving circuit 15. The control circuit 13 calculates the release time of the mechanical shutter 4 from that of the liquid crystal shutter 5, and sets the release time of the mechanical shutter longer than that of the liquid crystal shutter. The driving circuit 15 generates a DC pulse with prescribed pulse width in a prescribed timing, applies it on the liquid crystal shutter 5, and opens and closes the shutter. Thus a quick shutter speed and optional shutter speed are obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a cell gap to assure a bistable driving characteristic and to obtain good display characteristics by forming dummies corresponding to thin film transistors on substrates on which the thin film TRs are formed and using the dummies as the spacers between the substrates. CONSTITUTION:The dummies 7, 7... are disposed near the thin film transistors 6, 6 and are provided as the spacers between the glass substrates 2 and 3. The respective elements of the dummies 7 have respectively the same thickness as the thickness of the respective elements corresponding picture element electrodes 5 or the TRs 6. The dummies 7 are thicker than the TRs 6 by as much as the thickness of a pseudo picture element electrodes 16 and, therefore, the cell gap attains the specified value corresponding to the thickness of the dummies 7, 7.... Since the thickness of the dummies correspond to the TRs 6 in such a manner and are formed with the equally good accuracy as the accuracy thereof, the cell gap is uniformized and if the cell is formed to a prescribed narrow gap, the bistable driving characteristic of a ferroelectric liquid crystal is assured.

    • PURPOSE:To permit displaying of medium contrast by applying a 1st voltage which puts the arrangement state of liquid crystal molecules into a 1st state and a 2nd voltage which puts the arrangement state of the liquid crystal molecules into the 2nd state alternately between the electrodes of 1st and 2nd glass substrates at the frequency higher than the flickering frequency of the human eyes. CONSTITUTION:The 1st voltage which puts the arrangement state of the liquid crystal molecules into the 1st state and the 2nd voltage which puts the arrangement state of the liquid crystal molecules into the 2nd state are applied alternately between the electrodes of the 1st and 2nd glass substrates at the frequency higher than the flickering frequency of the human eyes. For example, green light and red light arrive alternately at the human eyes 6 when the voltage of an 'H' level and the voltage of an 'L' level are alternately applied to one transparent electrode of the liquid crystal display element. Since the frequency of the voltage change is larger than the flickering frequency, the human eyes 6 cannot discriminate the green light and red light. The light is thus visible as the intermediate color of the green and red.

    • PURPOSE:To secure orientation condition of liquid crystals in good condition without causing adverse effect on the liquid crystals due to a sealing resin for sealing an injecting port of the liquid crystals by injecting pieces of inactive resin under pressure through the injecting port after injecting the liquid crystals through the injecting port of the liquid crystals, then sealing the liquid crystals with the sealing resin. CONSTITUTION:A sealing material 3 is provided to three edges of a square superposed surface of an upper 1, and lower 2 substrates. A space where this sealing material is absent is used as an injecting port 4 of liquid crystals. Then, liquid crystals such as ferroelectric liquid crystals having chiral smectic C phase are injected from the injecting port 4. Since, in this case, the injecting port 4 is so wide as corresponding to one edge of the superposed surface of the upper and lower substrates 1, 2, even such ferroelectric liquid crystals having high viscosity can be injected quickly. When the injection of the liquid crystals is finished, pieces of an inactive resin 5 are forced under pressure through the injecting port 4, then the injecting port 4 is closed. By this process, dissolution of the sealing resin into the liquid crystal is prevented almost completely, preventing also defective orientation near the injecting port, also.

    • PURPOSE:To freely change the ratio of regions in an on state and off state and to permit medium contrast display by providing electrodes for impressing a bias voltage to display segments. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element is formed by oppositely disposing two sheets of glass substrates 11, 21 formed with the transparent electrodes 12, 22 on the inside and filling a ferroelectric liquid crystal 25 exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase into the gap therebetween. The element is provided with the electrodes 13 for impressing the bias voltage to the display segments in addition to the transparent electrodes for display. The change over of the display within the segments is confined to the partial change-over and two states can be produced simultaneously by impressing the bias voltage to the display segments in the above-mentioned manner. Both of the two states are in the stable state when the two states are simultaneously produced in one segment. Said state is maintained unless the pulses above the threshold voltage is impressed to the segments. The medium contrast display is thus permitted by regulating the bias voltage to change the ratio of the two states in the above-mentioned manner.
