    • PURPOSE:To provide a cell gap to assure bistable driving characteristic and to prevent the generation of an orientation defect by using thin-film transistors (TFTRs) as the spacers between substrates or dummies as the spacers between the substrates and joining the spacers and the substrate opposite to the substrate on which the spacers are formed by an adhesive agent. CONSTITUTION:The TFTRs 5 are used as the spacers between the substrates 1 and 2 or the dummies 15 corresponding to the TFTRs 5 are formed on the substrate 2 on which the TFTRs 5 are formed and said dummies 15 are used as the spacers between the substrates 1 and 2. The spacers 15 and the substrate 1 opposite to the substrate 2 on which the spacers 15 are formed are joined by the adhesive agent. The TFTRs 5 as the spacers 15 or the dummies 15 corresponding to the TFTRs 5 are, therefore, formed to the thickness of good accuracy. The cell gap which is uniformly narrow over the entire region of the liquid crystal element is thereby obtd. and the change in the cell gap between the substrates is suppressed even when casual external force is exerted on the liquid crystal cell.

    • PURPOSE:To improve bistability of a ferroelectric liquid crystal by subjecting the ferroelectric liquid crystal to specified heat-treatment by applying an AC voltage. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell for a shutter permitting quick response, etc. is formed by injecting ferroelectric liquid crystals into a space between counter substrates. Then, the ferroelectric liquid crystals are heated by heating the liquid crystal cell until the ferroelectric liquid crystals form an isotropic liquid phase. The ferroelectric liquid crystals are then cooled slowly while applying an AC voltage to the ferroelectric liquid crystals. The ferroelectric liquid crystals are oriented uniformly and the internal bias in the liquid crystal cell is also made uniform by the heat-treatment under AC voltage. As a result, the bistability of the ferroelectric liquid crystals is improved and the storage of display in both ON and OFF state is stabilized permitting thus satisfactory bistable operation.

    • PURPOSE: To form a thin cell gap with good reproducibility by coating one substrate with sensitive resin and irradiating a spacer part with ultraviolet light, irradiating a display part with weak ultraviolet light from the reverse side of the substrate, and developing the display part, and forming the spacer and an oriented film at the same time.
      CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrode 12 is formed on the surface of one substrate 11 and patterned, and photosensitive resin 13 is applied from above it; and the part as the spacer for forming a gap between the substrate and opposite substrate 11 is irradiated with weak ultraviolet light 17 from the reverse side of the substrate 11 and developed to form the spacer 18 and oriented film 19 at the same time. Thus, the liquid-crystal display device which has a cell gap of less than several μm is manufactured relatively easily with good reproducibility.
