Then the channel with a highest electric field strength is set and a radio section of the mobile equipment 111 is tuned to the forward control channel with the highest electric field strength being the access channel of the base station 101.

Then, when the amount is large, a changeover switching is switched to a terminal B, piezoelectric elements 13 and 13' are driven by a piezoelectric element driver 14, the rotary heads 2 and 2' come into noncontact state with the magnetic tape 3 and the tape 3 is traveled at a high speed. In this method, by making the heads 2 and 2' in noncontact state with the tape 3 for the time to research the desired position on the tape 3, the action time of the full device is even many times the life time of the head while satisfying the condition of high speed access.

By this method, a reference pulse from the variable delay circuit 24 is changed in phase, and hence a traveling phase of a magnetic tape 13 is changed so as to make the recording only head on-track of the specified recorded track.

Thus the noises of a fixed pattern proper to a digital system can be sequentially cancelled at variable speed reproduction.

Thus, automatic tracking is implemented by the regeneration signal level difference only due to off-tracking.
