    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent image quality deterioration in an output image in the case of quantization and to save the capacity of a memory for storing quantization errors by quantizing data, based on a threshold level and on a constant set in response to an output gradation number at an error spread processing section, and accumulating the errors. SOLUTION: In the case of quantizing a noted pixel from an image input section 1 at a quantization section 202, an output gradation number setting section 211 sets threshold levels of 0, 1, 0, 1, 2 and 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 depending on the output gradation number of binary, ternary and quinary. In the case of storing data in an FIFO memory 210, a shift number L of 4, 3, 2 are set corresponding to a binary, ternary and quinary gradation number with input image data in 8 bits, the data are shifted to the right by L bits and then stored, and a carry amount is stored in a register 208 and when it is read, the carry is shifted to the left by L bits. Thus, the number of bits of cells in the FIFO memory 210 is reduced, and when the output gradation number is high, errors for quantization are reduced and accurate error spread processing is attained.
