    • Disclosed is a packet forwarding system having an efficient packet memory management unit and an operation method therefor. The packet forwarding system includes an input unit inputting data in unit of transmission; a packet memory management unit assembling the data into an Internet Protocol(IP) packet and loading the packet into a packet memory, and reading out pointers of an IP packet header and an IP packet trailer connected to the header; a header processing unit deciding a packet classification and a transmission destination by using the read header, and re-transmitting to the packet memory management unit the pointer of the trailer connected to the header; and an output unit dividing the trailer read from the packet memory management unit into data in units of transmission based on the pointers of the header transmitted from the header processing unit and the trailer, and outputting the divided data to a channel.

    • A process of handling packet data in a packet buffer is disclosed. Free pointers are stored in a plurality of free pointer queues, with each of the plurality free pointer queues in a form of a linked list and the free pointers are retrieved from each of the plurality of free pointer queues and storing in a prefetch memory to provide a throughput of one free pointer per clock cycle. When an initial portion of a data packet is received, two free pointers are retrieved from the prefetch memory. One of the two free pointers is stored in a start pointer register connoting a start of the data packet and one free pointer is supplied for data elements of the data packet. One free pointer per middle data element is supplied, while no new pointer is needed for the end of packet data element. The start of the data packet is linked with an end of packet portion of a previously received packet in an output queue memory and a data element is read out of the data packet from the output queue memory when selected by a transmission scheduler and releasing a pointer of the data element to one of the plurality of free pointer queues in a way that balances the lengths of all free pointer queues. Additionally, all pointers of a packet are released to one of the plurality of free pointer queues within one cycle when the packet is dropped.

    • A dispatch mechanism is provided for dispatching data units, (e.g. datagrams or packets) divided into one or more fragments, via a telecommunications network. The dispatch mechanism includes a queue for queuing fragments for transmission. It further includes a queue controller operable when a fill level of the queue exceeds a threshold value to discard fragments of data units for which a fragment has not already been queued and to add to the queue fragments of data units for which a fragment has already been queued. The dispatch mechanism maintains a record of data units which are to be transmitted (that is when one fragment of the data unit has already been passed for despatch) and a record of data units which are to be dropped (that is data units for which a fragment has already been dropped). The dispatch mechanism enables more effective use of network capacity by reducing the possibility of incomplete data units being transmitted over the network. In other words, where one data unit fragment is dropped, a mechanism ensures that all remaining fragments of that data unit are dropped. Also, where one data unit fragment has been sent, the mechanism ensures that all other fragments for that data unit are sent, irrespective of the fill level of the output queue when a data fragment for transmission is processed.
