    • A full duplex radio (10) having improved properties is obtained by using asymmetric surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters (70, 92, 100, 100', 112). The filters (70, 92, 100, 100', 112) are composed of series (50 1 , 50 1 ') and parallel (50 2 , 50 2 ') coupled SAW resonators. Asymmetry is obtained by covering either of the series (50 1 , 50 1 ') or parallel (50 2 , 50 2 ') resonators of each filter (70, 92, 100, 100', 112) with a dielectric layer (96) to increase the SAW coupling coefficient (Cs, Cp) of the covered resonators (50 1 ', 50 2 ') relative to the uncovered resonators (50 1 , 50 2 ). The filters (70, 92, 100, 100', 112) are desirably in pairs arranged with mirror image frequency asymmetry such that the steeper skirts (87, 79) of the frequency response (91', 91'') are adjacent. Greater pass-band bandwidths (77, 77', 77'') can be obtained without adverse affect on transmitter and receiver isolation.

The anti-resonance frequency of the one one-port surface acoustic wave resonator (5,6,9) is positioned on the side of higher frequencies than those of the pass band of the surface acoustic wave filter disposed on the side where the one-port surface acoustic wave resonator is connected in series.

    • A surface acoustic wave filter includes a piezoelectric substrate, input and output IDTs, and first and second direction changing IDTs, wherein at least one of the input and output IDTs includes a weighted interdigital transducer, the input and output IDTs being arranged in a direction perpendicular to a propagation direction of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) oscillated by the input IDT; the first direction changing IDT changes the propagation direction of the SAW, which has propagated in a left direction from the input IDT, into a direction towards the output IDT; the second direction changing IDT changes the propagation direction of the SAW, which has propagated in a right direction from the input IDT, into a direction towards the output IDT; and an interval between the input and output IDTs and the first and second direction changing IDTs is set for obtaining at the output IDT the SAW having desired frequency characteristics.
