摘要： A method of combusting fuel and air in a burner of an external combustion engine having a heater head. The fuel and air are combined to form a fuel-air mixture which is characterized by a fuel-air ratio. An exhaust gas product is produced when the fuel-air mixture is combusted in the burner of the external combustion engine. A flame is formed by igniting the fuel-air mixture at a first fuel-air ratio produced by a first air flow rate and a fuel flow rate. The air flow rate is then increased to produce a second fuel-air ratio. The fuel flow rate is also controlled based upon a temperature of the heater head of the external combustion engine. The flame is maintained at the second fuel-air ratin adjusting the air flow rate based on the fuel flow rate. The external combustion engine may be, for example, a Stirling cycle engine.

摘要： An auxiliary power system for providing electrical power and heat to an indoor area includes an external combustion engine, such as a Stirling cycle engine (101), for generating mechanical energy and thermal energy. The external combustion engine (101) burns a fuel with substantially complete combustion such that exhaust emissions from the external combustion engine (101) are below a predetermined exhaust level. A generator (102) is coupled to the external combustion engine (101) and converts the mechanical energy produced by the external combustion engine (101) to electrical power. A first power output is used to provide the electrical power produced by the generator (102). The external combustion engine (101) and generator (102) are disposed within a housing such that the external combustion engine (101), generator (102) and housing combination is a portable size. The thermal energy generated by the external combustion engine (101) may be used to heat the atmosphere surrounding the housing.

A flexure is employed as a common pivot between links coupled eccentrically to the engine axles. Flexure joint couplings may be used to couple the connecting rods to respective pistons of an engine. Other improvements to a Stirling machine include radiative heating of the heater head and the use of a ceramic heater head to transmit radiative heat into the working fluid of the machine.

Also, a superheater mechanism for heating the thermal energy output and an expansion engine coupled to a generator. The expansion engine converts the thermal energy output from the burner to mechanical energy output. The generator converts mechanical energy output from the expansion engine to electrical energy output. The expansion engine may also includes vapor output. Some embodiments of the system further include a condenser for condensing the vapor output, a pump for pumping the vapor output and a boiler in fluid communication with the pump. The pump pumps the vapor output to the boiler.

摘要： A method for controlling the fuel-air ratio of a burner having a blower responsive to a blower drive signal for injecting air into the burner. The method is based at least on the concentration of a gas in an exhaust gas product of a combustion chamber of the burner and includes measuring the gas concentration in the exhaust gas product, deriving a gas concentration signal from the measured gas concentration, determining the fuel-air ratio from the gas concentration signal and the sign of the derivative of the gas concentration signal with respect to the blower drive signal, and controlling the fuel-air ratio by adjusting the air flow rate into the burner. The burner may be, for example, in a Stirling cycle engine.

摘要： An improvement is provided to a pressurized close-cycle machine that has a cold-end pressure vessel (70) and is of the type having a piston (60, 128) undergoing reciprocating linear motion within a cylinder containing a working fluid heated by conduction through a heater (52, 106) by heat from an external thermal source. The improvement includes a heat exchanger for cooling the working fluid, where the heat exchanger is disposed within the cold-end pressure vessel by welding or other methods. A coolant tube (130) is used to convey coolant through the heat exchanger.
