    • A method for producing a carburized and quenched member, wherein use is made of an alloy as a material which contains Fe as a primary component, 0.10 to 0.50 wt % of C, and 0.50 to 1.50 wt % of Si, and exhibits a hardenability (J) of 35 to 50 (at 12.5 mm) as measured by Jominy test, forming the material into a member having a desired shape, subjecting the member to a carburizing treatment in an anti-oxidizing atmosphere, to form a carburized layer, and then subjecting it to a quenching treatment under a condition wherein it is cooled monotonously from a perlite transformation temperature (A1 temperature) to a martensitic transformation starting temperature (Ms temperature) and a degree of rapid cooling in quenching (H) takes a value of 0.01 to 0.08 (cm-1). The method allows the enhancement of the strength of a member, with satisfactory suppression of the strain by quenching and without the increase of production cost.
