摘要： A pacemaker system for a heart having an external muscle is used to control pacing of the heart during normal or even arrhythmic modes. In these modes, the muscle is stimulated synchronously with the heart to augment the heart's cardiac functions. When the heart undergoes ventricular fibrillation, the muscle is provided with a signal to cause the muscle to contract and expel blood from the heart chambers. Defibrillation shock is then applied to the heart to halt the fibrillation. The system is rendered more effective, safer and uses less power because the defibrillating energy is efficiently transferred to the heart muscles and not to the blood contained in its chambers. The system includes a microprocessor, muscle stimulating circuitry, defibrillation circuitry and an interface for exchanging signals between the microprocessor and the remaining components.

摘要： A time domain reflectometry (TDR) impedance sensor is provided for measuring body impedance along a lead or catheter implanted in a patient's cardiovascular system. The TDR sensor applies an electrical stimulus to the lead and measures reflections echoed from impedance variations along and distal to the lead, which are superimposed on the applied stimulus. The measured signals may be analyzed with respect to time-of-flight and distance along the lead to detect a plurality of physiologically meaningful signals.

摘要： A high speed telemetry system for implantable devices such as pacemaker includes a transmitter (22) disposed in an implantable housing (16) and an external receiver (44). Typically the housing is metallic and it attenuates drastically electromagnetic signals having frequencies above a relatively low cut-off frequency. The transmitter includes circuitry for generating cosine waves of different frequencies and for selectively assembling these waves to define a set of data symbols. Preferably one of said frequency is a multiple of the other. Integer halve-periods of the waves are selected to define the symbols such that the overall data transmission rate exceeds the cutoff frequency. The external receiver synchronizes itself to the transmitter, and decodes the symbols using a constellation chart to decode the symbols into binary data.

摘要： An implantable device (10) and method for treating cardia arrhythmias in a patient's heart (11) are disclosed. A source of antitachycardia pacing therapy and an electrode system including at least three electrodes (80, 83, 86) for delivering the antitachycardia pacing therapy to the heart are provided. Circuitry and software (17, 19) for detecting a tachycardia having a site of focus in the heart and for determining the relative distances of the electrodes from the focus site are also provided.
